AlaCan Highway

by crl99645

HELP!!!!! I'm driving to Palmer Alaska on Tuesday 02/28/06!! I'm coming from Wenatchee, WA and it's a 45 hour drive (I'll be doing it in 15 hours each day, so 3 days of driving). I'm stopping in Dawson Creek, BC for the first night. I know of 3 hotels there. BUT THEN I CAN'T FIND ANY HOTELS ALONG THE HIGHWAY FOR MY SECOND NIGHT!!! And I do NOT want to sleep in my car along the AlaCan Highway.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW OF ANY HOTELS ALONG THE ALACAN HIGHWAY?!!??!! PLEASE HELP!

I can suggest a fwe hotels for you along the AlCan.

Watson Lake, YT - Hadwens B&B near the Watson Lake airport. Youll have to drive a few miles north from the signpost forest, but its worth it.

Burwash Landing, YT - A hotel adjoins the gas station. You cant miss it and they are open year round. There is a restaurant here too.

Tok, AK - Fast Eddies, on the right side of the highway. Easy to find and open all year. They have a decent restaurant too. 907-883-4411

Also, there is a small hotel/gas station along the highway between the Alaska border and Burwash landing. I cant remember the name but its in the Kluane area and they are open in the winter.

I think youll find at least one open hotel in Ft Nelson, Watson Lake, Whitehorse,Haines Junction, and Glennallen, AK. The road can be rough from Haines Junction north. February weather in AK has been mild so far.
If you dont have one, get a copy of the Milepost www.milepost.com

Have a great drive!

Travel Tips for Anchorage

You must visit the welcome...

by Cynjoechris

You must visit the welcome center downtown and then take a walk down 4th street for shops and great little restraunts.
Also, take a tour of Mt. Mkinley. My fondest memory of my home is the beautiful mountains. They own a part of my heart.

See Anchorage & surroundings...

by victorwkf

See Anchorage & surroundings from the aeroplane. When you are landing at the Anchorage airport during daytime, do look out the aeroplane window and enjoy the really fantastic view of nature at it's best ! You can see the snow capped Chugach mountains, the vast plains, the waters of the Knik and Turnagain arms and even as far as the snow capped Alaska Range and the Talkeetna mountains. Fantastic view, and too bad I did not take any photographs. Very good first impression of my visit to Alaska indeed !

Like an Onion

Pack jackets and rain gear. Be ready for anything when it comes to weather here. If you abide by global warming or not know that the weather can be wacky. Most locals are used to it and wear shorts when it's warm-- say 40 degrees. If your more warm blooded it's best to be like an onion and dress in layers. That way you can always "unlayer" if you feel warm enough. see above You can get anything here, at Walmart or otherwise, that you'll need. It may seem a little more expensive though. zoom lens ability to get good shots of the mountains and wildlife Think "to stay warm and dry" when packing. If all else fails we have R.E.I.. Insect repellant if visiting in the summer. The misquito is the (unofficial) state bird. (The official state bird, by the way, is the ptarmigan. It's pronounced with the "p" being silent.)

Hiking - Mount Magnificent & Mount Significant

by onebadcat

This is a fantastic ridge walk in the rugged tundra that lies above the Eagle River valley. Views of Eagle River and surrounding Chugach State Park are awesome on a clear summer day. Water is scarce at best so bring what you need with you. Mount Magnificent is 5 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 2300 feet and Mount Significant is 14 miles and 5200 feet of elevation gain (significantly harder day). Despite the mileage and climbing the hardest part of your adventure may be finding the trailhead. It is worth the search!

The hike starts in a residential area above Eagle River at a gravel turnout. From the 'parking area' follow the steep path through overgrown bushes up to an abandoned road. Follow this wide trail all the way to a flat area at an area known as 'mile hi pass'. There is a good lookout knoll up to your left with great berry picking in season. If you are hiking out to Mt Mag or Mt Sig follow the trail to your right and uphill to the ridge. From here you follow the ridgeline and the trail fades in and out of the tundra as you make your way to Mt Mag. You will go over two high points in the ridge before dropping down into a minor valley. From the depression stay left of the ridge and traverse a bit until you are below the true summit then go up to the top. (you will see a faint trail here to guide you) Don't forget to sign the summit register. To continue to Mt Significant you keep following the ridgelines up and down to a final climb to the summit. It is 4 miles to the climb up Mt Sig from Mt Mag. You should have a map for this part of the hike as there are intersecting ridges along the way that will steer you the wrong direction if taken. Bring extra clothes, water and food. Wear good footwear as the trail is steep and rocky in palces. Weather can change fast in the mountains so have an extra jacket at the very least.

Athabascan Dena'ina Indian History

by akskibunny

Eklutna Historical Park is only about a 20 minute drive north of Anchorage. The park is rather small but worth the stop. There is a visitors center with interesting Athabascan Indian items. And I suggest paying the extra money for the short tour of the grounds which contain a few historical buildings and the village cemetery, complete with "spirit houses". It was interesting to learn of the connection between these Native Alaskans and the Russian's who came to the area centuries ago (which explains the Russian Orthodox Church on the park grounds... not something one would normally connect to Indians)
