The Center of Everywhere

I would recommend this to all budget travellers. It is a quiet & clean place to stay for the lowest price in the area.

Unique Quality: Location Location Location: It's at the center of a busy route. The bus stop is right out front with routes to downtown, Dimond Center, & the airport. Also out front is a Japanese restaurant & many other eateries are in walking distance. On the corners of Spendard & Minnasota are gas stations where you can pick up a hot breakfast. At the bowling ally is a bar & there are other nightclubs in walking distance.

Old But Inexpensive in the Winter and Quaint

An experience that I will never forget

Unique Quality: Old fixtures from the 50's and rooms that are large, but a hideaway from the sterile, newly built motels and hotels.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

Are these two hotel addresses in a safe place?

by Wendy67

Anchorage Downtown Hotel
826 K Street
Anchorage AK 99501

and

Chelsea Inn Hotel
3836 Spenard Road
Anchorage, AK 99507

Any idea how far these addresses are from the airport?

Thanks so much!

Both are in 'safe' places though most of this city is safe by national standards. If you are a woman traveling alone take the normal precautions at night and you will be fine. Chelsea Inn is closer to the airport, Anchorage Downtown Hotel is walking distance from some good bars and restaurants and is only about 3-4 miles from the airport. I personally would prefer the downtown location if only for access on foot to things to do.

Of the two hotels the one on K St. may be slightly safer, but it is about 15-20 mins. from the airport. It would only be a short walk to downtown shops and resturants though. The one on Spenard would be closer to the airport, about a 5 min. ride, but the neighborhood it's in has a bit more crime, not the best selection of restuarants, and few shops.

You two are becoming my personal travel guides for Alaska! Our choice of a hotel in Anchorage is for convenience only. Our flight arrives in Anchorage at 11:00 pm, so we just need a place to rest our head until the morning when we'll drive to Seward. On the trip back, our flight doesn't leave Anchorage until 9:00 p.m., so we just need a place to stay on the 15th near the airport. I've found, though, that airport hotels are very expensive and it just seems ridiculous to spend big money on a place to sleep for a night.

Just keep in mind that Anchorage is a small city when you are on the West side. The cab ride is a few minutes different and will be the difference between a $10 ride and a $20 ride to the airport. As far as the "crime" in Spenard goes I wouldn't let it affect your choice.

Both hotels have shuttle buses to and from the airport so that should not be a problem. Chelsea Inn is less expensive and for just one late night it would be fine.
