Advice on finding a budget rate Hotel/Motel In Anchorage

by rnrman

Flying from the UK for our first visit to Alaska and then heading down to Utah and Arizona (these regions we know well). Due to the length of the vacation we have to spread the finance with care (darn!) We are looking for a budget rate Hotel/Motel in Anchorage for one night only in September, preferably with an airport shuttle or courtesy car. The reviews on the net are so mixed it seems a bit of a lottery choosing. If anyone has some good advice or experience staying in Anchorage it would be good to hear from you. Thanks John.

Anchorage hotels have extended their "High" season to the end of September, so costs are way up there. Nicer places like the Captain Cook run $200+ in summer and below $100 in winter - the difference is that drastic.
I've never stayed at the hostel in Anchorage but have heard good things about it. KareninCalifornia had a good write up in her tips.
The downtown hotels do not have shuttle buses - I guess the cab companies boycott any hotel that tries to start up shuttle service. A cab will run you $15 to get downtown from the airport.
Lots of cheaper hotels by the airport with shuttle service. Microtel is one, Westcoast International is another. Barrett Inn is the bestwestern mentioned above. I have some tips on my Anchorage pages...

Travel Tips for Anchorage

Take a drive up to Denali...

by bmor7

Take a drive up to Denali National Park where you will see awe-inspiring and majestic views of Mnt. McKinley at every turn of the road north of Wasilla. The park itself is terrific and is filled with this regions greatest animals Backpacking with one of my best friends thru the mountains outside of Anchorage to a cabin 7 miles in. The trail itself went on for 20 miles with cabins spread along the way...and at only $5 a nite. The trail was perfect, as others cross country skied the pass. We took our dog 'Tipper', an Alaskan Malamute/German Sheppard...a great dog. We stayed the weekend in the cabin camping out and having a blast in the quiet wonder of this great State.

"The Lone Ranger and Tonto were camping in the desert. They set up their
tent cover in the cold night and fell asleep. Some hours later, a wide eyed
Tonto wakes up his snoring friend. "Lone Ranger, look up at sky and tell
Tonto what you see."The Lone Ranger sleepily replies, "I see millions of
stars." "What that tells you?" asks Tonto. The Lone Ranger ponders for a
minute. "Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of
galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me
that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter
past three. Theologically, it' s evident the Creator is all powerful and we
are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a
beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Tonto?" "It tells Tonto, Keemo
sahbee big idiot! Somebody stole our tent!" the McKay Building finally being changed, that old eyesore

Don't forget warm gloves

by Scandic

Take a backpack if you want to hike around the town. It is very easy way to get knwo this beautiful city and a backpack carries easily all your stuff. Please, don't forget your gloves. I did and my poor fingers. Even the temperature is not that bad, the windchill increase extre freezing effect. So, take your gloves. You will find everyhting you need from Anchorage, just in case if you forget soemthing. Camere sure, but take bag for it and don't leave it to the cold car, even for a while. REI is a lace where you can buy everykind of outdoor clothes, but prices, those are way way too high.

Cross-Country Skiing At Russian Jack Springs Park

by mcpangie

There are about 6 miles of groomed Nordic ski trails in East Anchorage in Russian Jack Springs Park (accessed off Debarr Road). The trails are lighted, making skiing a good activity day or evening. This park was may favorite place to ski in Anchorage.

The trail system at Russian Jack hooks up to the trails at Alaska Pacific University and beyond making for all day skiing around Anchorage if you'd like. You can ski all day with only the moose and a few other skiers as company. You’ll be surprised at how much wooded areas are in Anchorage once you are out on the trails. The day I took this picture I had to be quite bundled up because it was well below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

I went to a historical presentation one time about how Russian Jack was a bootlegger who brewed moonshine in his still out at the springs when Anchorage was a young town and alcohol was prohibited. A map... You can get one ahead of time through the mail or buy one in Anchorage.

Hang-gliders at Flat Top Mountain

by cruisingbug

A short drive from downtown Anchorage brings you to Flat Top Mountain. Here you can find hiking trails, and just generally wowing scenic views. We caught shots of hang-gliders, who I'm sure had even better views of the area than we did.
