from Fairbank, how do I go north to see Actic ocean

by 9tigers

I realize that at Fairbanks, that would be end of the highway, but I read somewhere that people can go even furth north to see the ocean, how to get there? special transportaiton? any info?

thanks

Grab a guidebook on Alaska, then read it

by PR-7

And you'll find two ways to get WAY north of Fairbanks. One is to drive on the Dalton Hiway towards Prudhoe. This will get you to within a few kilometers of the Arctic Ocean, but you'll have to stop at the gates of the oil facilities. Or you can pay for a tour to either Prudhoe or Barrows, with companies like this one:

thanks!!!
by the way, I will be arriving Anchorage like 8PM in early June, will it be dark? or still bright

One thing I didn't read about in any guidebook

by PR-7

Is how late it stays light. I remember well reading a book before going to sleep, and glancing at my watch as the "evening" light was becoming too dim to read. It was after midnight and I was still able to read by twilight! Great if you want to do a lot of sightseeing, NOT so great if you want to sleep in a tent. 8 pm should still be fairly bright, if I remember correctly.

thanks, now I feel better... b/c the actic trip starts like 6:30AM
I think by the time we get close to the actic, it would be like day light and I would be so lost :)

There are a few options, depending on how adventurous you are feeling..

Like PR-7 says there are some organized tours. A few of these fly you in one direction and drive in the other - becuase its a long, 400+ mile drive from Fairbanks to Deadhorse.

(By the way, Prudhoe Bay and Deadhorse are more or less the same place)

There is one rental company in Fairbanks that will rent you a truck or camper to drive up the Dalton to Deadhorse. You would still have to pay for some sort of tour to get the last few miles across private property to the ocean. A lot of the 400 miles is gravel, so it takes 14 hours or more each way.

If you just want to see the ocean, and you arent interested in the wilderness inbetween, you could fly Frontier Flying Service to Kaktovik. The landing strip is a small penninsula right on the Arctic Ocean. Its a small village and you can walk around freely. If you buy a fish stamp and bring a pole, you could fish for Arctic Char from the edge of the runway. The flight comes up in the morning on its way to Barrow, and returns in the late afternoon.

You could also fly to Barrow and walk to the ocean. In June you would have a good chance of seeing whales near Barrow. Frontier Flying Service and Alaska Air both fly to Barrow.

PS about the daylight...

In June it will not get dark until very late in Anchorage. Midnight or 1am.

In Fairbanks it will not get dark at all, any time in June.

In Barrow, Deadhorse, and Kaktovik- depending on the dates, the sun will not even set at all! It just makes one long loop around the sky for about 70 days.

Travel Tips for Anchorage

Holy Family Cathedral

by Stephen-KarenConn

Holy Family Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Anchorage is small and plain as cathedrals go, but still interesting to see if you are in downtown Anchorage. The structure was moved in the 1920s from the tiny town of Kniki, 57 miles south of Anchorage, by horse and sleigh. Church members have since added to the building and it has been in it's current form since 1952.

In front of the cathedral is the statue of a praying saint, and a plaque commemorating the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1981. During his visit the pope held a mass attended by 50,000 people in a nearby park.

Helicopter Ride to land on a glacier!

by jumpingnorman

I am scared of helicopters and VT Friends Yaqui and Slapshot encouraged me to ride it. My sister already reserved a helicopter in Girdwood to take us to a glacier and land us on one! The trip was going to take 90 minutes and also promises to show some wildlife like seals, birds, and possibly bears.

I was hesitant - but my sister already paid the $425 per person trip ($850 for the two of us! Quite expensive! Will it be worth it???)

So, we drove to Girdwood which is about 45 minutes away from Anchorage and saw the red plane which looked so new (it has been used only a month). We had two pilots Marcus and Jordan-- the latter was applying for a job there and was from New Zealand - landing on islandsin NZ. But it was reassuring that just in case Marcus had a heart attack, Jordan can take over, hehehe...I'm the one who will probably collapse though from fear!

But when we finally took off, I did not even realize it, it was so smooth and the ride was great! The only scary part is when the pilot lets the chopper hover at the edge of a mountain and it was kinda turbulent...but landing on the glacier was awesome and we have pictures to prove it! Amazing views and a great experience to be cherished forever.

Thanks to my generous sister, VTer jumpingwithnorman!:)

Watch Huge Salmon Swimming Upstream

by ringleader

We visited Ship Creek (behind the Ulu Knife Factory) to see the King Salmon swimming upstream and the hundred-and-one fishermen and tourists trying to hook them. Evidentally, you have to HOOK them in order to keep them (or maybe to qualify for the derby?) and not snag them.

Watch for Kings in June and Coho, Pink and Chum in August and September.
