Cheaper car rentals ??

by dpw1959

I was reading that if you rent a car away from the Airport then you pay much less. I am going to be landing in Anchorage on June 27 and departing on July 7, 2007. I plan to drive to Homer and back. Anyone have any lesser expensive car rental agency alternatives that are reliable?
From what I am seeing, I would be paying a ridiculous $800 for this time period.

Try Affordable New Car Rentals in Spenard? That timeframe is the absolute peak season so be aware that what hasn't been booked yet will be expensive. Good luck.

Anywhere you rent except the airport will save you the 10% tax that applies to cars rented at the airport. That's 10% of the entire bill. We rented from something like Budget or Avis in downtown and the rental wasn't too bad but we were there Aug 29- Sept 15, which is after the peak season. Also the car wasn't too great, but manageable.

Homer is fantastic.

Happy trails,

Travel Tips for Anchorage

Wildlife is everywhere!

by AlaskaGirl03

Moose, bear, fox! All have been seen in my back yard! It's incredible! (I need to find my pictures!)! The first night in my new house, I was closing window blinds and thought to myself "I don't remember seeing a tree outside this window......" and looked closer and there was a HUGE bull moose with a huge antler rack! I could've reached out and touched him! Amazing!

Alaska Statehood Monument at Ship Creek Overlook

by Stephen-KarenConn

This monument commemorates Alaska's admission to the Union as the 49th state in 1959, during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Actually many folks say Eisenhower was a major barrier to Alaska statehood, but he was the president, so he still gets his bust on the monument. It was erected in 1990, in honor of 75 years since the establishment of Anchorage, and also the centennial of President Eisenhower's birth.

From the overlook you can see the Alaska Railroad yards, part of the Port of Anchorage and the neighborhood of Government Hill, across the Ship Creek river bottom. This is where the tent city of Knik Anchorage, later shortened to Anchorage, was set up in 1914. An informative set of signs on the overlook explains the history of what your are seeing.

Ship Creek itself is full of salmon in June and August, and a walkway that crosses a dam just upstream from here is a good place to watch the fish and to feed ducks. There is a stairway which leads down from the overlook to the river bottom. It's a strenuous climb back up the stairs.

2nd Avenue and E Street, Downtown Anchorage.

Make Friends At the Alaska Zoo

by mcpangie

You can go to the Alaska Zoo and make a friend. Children enjoy the petting zoo, and animals like this camel that enjoy visitors stopping by. It’s a really great place for children to learn a little about some animals native to Alaska, and also from foreign lands. The Alaska Zoo is a popular destination for families and school groups, but there is plenty for adults as well... supporting a good cause. Some of the animals they’ve had over the years were orphans who needed a place to be safe. When I was young one of the more popular animals for about twenty years was Binky, an orphaned polar bear, or nanook, who found a home at the Alaska Zoo and one the hearts of Alaskans and visitors alike. Binky and Nuka, another polar bear, lived there for years. Binky hit the national news one year when some foolish person tried to get in his cage. Binky and his friend Nuka passed away in 1995.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

by akskibunny

There are three choices within 45 minutes of Anchorage:
Hilltop Ski Area is located on "Hillside", 15 minutes from downtown. 907-346-1446
Alpenglow at Artic Valley is about 25 minutes north. It has steeper slopes than Hilltop and great views of Anchorage due to the wide-open terrain. Don't expect high speed trams here... it's a bit rustic and operated by the Anchorage Ski Club but worthy of checking out especially if you can't make it to Alyeska. 907-428-1208
Alyeska Resort is Alaska's premier resort and is located about 40 miles south in the charming town of Girdwood (aka Gird-stock to some). Alyeska offers skiing for all skill levels. Ride the tram to the top and take a moment to appreciate the views of Turnagain Arm and the surrounding mountains. (The tram is open year-round for the views!) If it's good enough for the Warren Miller crew.....
There's some good Nordic trails here as well. 907-754-1111

Ice Skating

by mcpangie

This picture was taken on a day it was about -25 degrees Farenheit. That's pretty darn cold. Most people don't venture out on days like that. But it can be lovely.

This picture is at Cheney Lake, and you can see the outline of the place that is kept clear for ice skating. The trees are covered with hoarfrost. You can see how big the crystals get on the nearby branches. Far in the distance that steam is coming out of a water plant on the edge of Anchorage. I thought it was cool to see how the pressure system was keeping the steamcloud low to the ground.
