One road north and one road south
by goingsolo
North of Anchorage, the only road leading out of the city is the Glenn Highway. The Glenn connects with 5th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. Heading south, Gambell Street becomes the Seward Highway.
Most roads in Alaska are not well maintained in comparison to the highways and byways of the lower 48. Still, these are paved highways and should be no trouble in the summer. Watch out for construction, which is constant in the summer. And be wary of moose and bear which occasionally run across the road.
Closing times...

My first experience of restaurants is downtown of Anchorage wasn't that neat. It was Monday night, about 9 p.m. and we wanted to go to eat in restaurant. However, there was NOTHING open in downtown, absolutely nothing with reasonable prices 10-15$. Sullivans Steakhouse and Orso were the only places, so not much choices. It was extremely frustrating to wonder around the city and try to find place to heat. I couldn't beleive it, because it is anyway the biggest town in Alaska. We didn't find anything else than Applebees while driving back to airport. Not very unique, but at least they served food there.
So, keep in mind at off tourist season, prepare.
Always smile and the world will smile back at you.

What took me by surprise was the fact that the Native Alaskan already knew who we were. I would walk into a shop, food place, just about anywhere and the Native people would say "Your dine'" which in my native tougue (Navajo) means the people. They would say "Your the break-away-people". About a 1000 years ago a group of people sojourned over the snowy mountain but did promise to return...to make a long story short, we never did return but venture down to the Southwest part of the United State, there the Spanish people call us Navajos.
What I did learn from the nice gentle people of Alaska is the genuine kindness, and sense of sharing their culture and way of life with the world. Always SMILING!

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race begins in Anchorage in March. Teams of dogs and mushers travel over 1,000 miles to Nome. Every year, these teams compete to finish the race in the fastest amount of time.
Kaladi Brothers Coffee
by Scandic
This is, definitely, the best coffee of Alaska and Anchorage. Located all around of the town. So much better then anything else and the selection of syrups is amazing, a wide range sugar-free ones too:p. I probably picked up most of my coffees from New Sagaya's but the best Kaladi is there where the brewer is.
That is 9900 Old Sewrad highway, neatly hidden from the main streets. You might not find it, if you don't know the location.
Get off from New Seward highway, look for Frontage road and Brayton.
If I would be there with you, I would order large skinny latte with sugarfee chocolate and mint. Ah. Yummy. Check out also their production selection with funny t-shirts and mugs.
