Prince William sound flightseeing

by travelbug014

Anybody gone flightseeing to Prince William Sound from Anchorage? What are your thoughts/suggestions?

I recently returned from Anchorage trip and used Rust's Flying Service at Lake Hood Seaplane Base just adjacent Anchorage Int'l airport. While I did not fly their Prince William Sound flight tour, I hired a Rust DeHavilland Beaver float plane N4444Z and customized an exclusive flight (rode copilot) into several wilderness lakes for landings & takeoffs. Rust's has been flying Alaska since 1963 and is a first class operation with excellent mix of aircraft, prop & turboprop. I had a great experience with them. Will use them on every Alaska trip!

Rust's Prince William Sound Glacier Tour is two and one-half hours and costs $255 per person. They also have an extended tour that adds half an hour and takes in Columbia Glacier. That three hour tour is $285 per person. Their email is: info@flyrusts.com Website is www.flyrusts.com Phone: 1-800-544-2299 or when in Alaska 907-243-1595

Travel Tips for Anchorage

Ethereal

by Sharrie

It had been a looooooong day...

I had left Buenos Aires the night before on the flight to Miami (an 8-hr flight overnight flight). Reaching Miami in early morning around 4.30 am was no fun. There was no place I could go on my own. I was hoping to go to the beach but after talking to some at the airport, I decided not to. Miami is not the safest city in America. The beach would be isolated at 5 am & the weather wasn't suitable for a walk either.

So, was very glad when it's time to leave for Houston.
Houston is a commercial city like many in the States. I'll talk more about it later in my Houston page.

Arrived in L.A. almost midnight & checked into Radisson LAX for a 6 hour sleep.

Woke up early & head for airport for my flight to Anchorage via Seattle the next day.

So, early morning, I boarded Alaska Airlines & off I went to Anchorage. By the time I got into Anchorage, it's almost 3pm. It felt like I had been on an ultra long journey. Not to forget I've been in Antarctica for almost 2 weeks! This is the final leg of the trip... Antarctica >>> Arctic. Upon arriving at Anchorage, we were greeted by this gorgeous vistas... ahhhhh, those mountains, so very like those I've left behind in the South Pole & yet so very different!

There's life here...
I was excited.
I usually am on a plane, especially when I see what's out there!
The most incredible & unexpected sights!

Downtown Anchorage

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with all of the stuff that you will expect to find in a city...Hotels, Malls, Restaurants, Stop Lights, Traffic, Historic Sites and boring Concrete!! haha I've lived in Alaska for over 20 years and haven't really ever explored Anchorage properly. I had planned on exploring the city on my weekend trip of the Halloween Weekend 2003 but we ended up leaving Anchorage right away to go to Fairbanks and our return was spent at the malls doing so shopping!! And the weather was just terrible!! Rainy , Foggy and very low cloud cover!!

You might be invited...

You might be invited to go out for Ice Cream in cold cold freezing winter weather. Alaskans consume the most ice cream per capita of any state in the USA. I guess the theory is "Why wait for a sunny day?"!

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail

by mcpangie

This picture of Mount Susitna was taken from the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in downtown Anchorage in the spring. All the dark shapes in Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet are icebergs. The picture was taken during spring breakup in the mid to late 1990's. Mt. Susitna is the most prominent mountain that can be seen from Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. If you'd like to know the story behind Mt. Susitna, you can read more about a book called The Sleeping Lady at my Alaskana Book Nook page. I have always connected with stories like these that involve looking for hidden meaning in nature and the things I see. The story of Susitna and her love Nekatla is a beautiful story about love, and war, and the turmoil the later causes. I believe we really can learn these things by looking at the mountains because they do withstand the test of time. Depends on the time of year that you visit and the activity that you want to do. In the winter the trail is groomed for cross-country skiing. The rest of the year the bike trail is a wonderful place to walk, run, roller-blade or bike along the Cook Inlet. At any given time you will see a variety of people using the trail for fun and exercise.

The Costal Trail

by katmai

If you want a time of peace with views of the mountains go for a stroll on the Costal Trail that starts downtown and goes for miles along the coast of Cook Inlet. It is a paved trail that locals like to use for walking, biking, roller blading, and, in the wintertime, x-country skiing.
The views can be breathtaking of the mountains across the inlet. Plus there are several parks along the way to stop and enjoy as well.
The start downtown Anchorage is at the end of K St. and can also be accessed in the park at the end of 5th Ave..
