Lots of Short Men
by spintobecca
As this picture illustrates, there are lots of short men in Alaska. Perhaps it is the shortfall of women that attracts them- I don't know. At any rate be on the lookout for men with (ahem) well heeled boots on. It's such a shame to later get buyers remorse due to high heeled mens boots!
Tides of Turnagain Arm
by PA2AKgirl
The tides of Turnagain Arm are incredibly impressive. This place has the 2nd largest difference in tides in North America and something called a tidal bore which is uncommon, overall. This isn't a tsunami but it is a tidal wave and I recall seeing this on TV a couple years ago. Because the tide difference is so great, this huge wave forms (not all the time and not even some of the time, but it does happen here) and people choose this time to catch "the" wave. Due to the mudflats, it's pretty dangerous. However, just seeing the difference is tides is pretty amazing.
Title Wave Books
by Scandic
Title Wave Books is the largest independent bookstore in Alaska, and one of the largest new-and-used bookstores in the entire country! This is a wonderland for me, with its hundreds of shelves of books and a nice cozy Kaladi coffee shop. Plus the location is great and yeah, i coudl spend hours andb hours in this place. It has
33,000 square feet all on one level, plenty of room for jillions of great used books as well as a larger selection of new books. And it is open seven days a week.

Iditarod Sled Dog Race
by spintobecca
The Iditarod sled dog race begins in the City of Anchorage with Mushers racing past crowds of well-wishers. The year 2003 did not deposit much snow in the state of Alaska, so the town had to "make" a trail of snow for the sleds to leave the city on. So for the first itme ever, instead of Anchorage to Nome, in 2003 the race will "re-start" in Fairbanks, and race to Nome.
Girdwood, Mt. Alyeska area
by zrim
Girdwood is a small town towards the southern part of Turnagain Arm. I found this area to be very beautiful and there were roads heading into the mountains. I yearned to explore some of this area off the beaten path, but time was short and we wanted to hit Seward while it was still daylight.
