    I had only planned a daytrip to Barrow and arrived in the morning with no luggage, expecting to take the evening flight back to Fairbanks. Just 10 minutes before that plane was scheduled to arrive in Barrow a very thick fog blew in off the Arctic Ocean and the plane was turned back. How great, I thought, an unexpected opportunity to spend a night above the Arctic Circle.

    I walked immediately across the street from the airport to King Eider Inn, named for the Arctic duck. The lobby was bright and modern with a large inviting fireplace. This is a family owned hotel, built in 1998. A sign informed guests to take their shoes off at the front door, which I did.

    Unfortunately, no rooms were available, so I had to go to plan "B." That was fine with me; their rooms were too expensive anyway.

    Small, modern, convenient, expensive.

    • All things in Barrow are expensive, but of the few hotels, only the King Eider is nearly justifiable. It's close to the airport and has the best accomodations available.

    The architecture makes the King Eider worth visiting.

    • I stayed at the King Eider Inn and the hotel is the best in Barrow. The hotel is located across the street from the airport. The accomodations were clean and bright and the staff was very helpful in my tour of Barrow. The rates were not high for a five star hotel on top of the world.

    We had one night in Barrow. The plane was late getting in. Thankfully, the hotel is practically across the street from the terminal. This is a nice hotel and the rooms are comfortable and warm. The staff is friendly and they can give you some good information about Barrow. They told me about Arctic Adventure tours, which would give us the ride up to Point Barrow to look for polar bears.

    The hotel decor includes some items from the region. The lobby is also interesting. Note the chess set featuring birds from this region including the king eider.
