Denali Bluffs by annk Denali Bluffs is located in the "Glitter Gultch" area, a concentration of hotels, restaurants and a few shops just out side the National Park. The Bluffs is slightly up a hill with views of the mountains and some of the park. Rooms are nice but somewhat small. Ours had 2 double beds and a sink outside the bathroom. Can't imagine 4 people in the room, it's pretty cramped. Sister property is The Grande Denali Lodge further up the hill with incredible views.
- Good views - Nice balconies - Nicely decorated - Frequent shuttle service to other parts of "Glitter Gultch", the parks Visitor's Center and mercantile. - Good restaurant on premises - Alaska owned and operated (Had a power outage one night for 3 hours. The other properties stopped serving guests completely. Denali Bluffs offered free cold cuts).

Denali Princess by annk This complex is absolutely huge! Not sure how many it accomodates but it looked as if there were enough rooms for a couple of cruise ships. Of course you can book a room even if you're not on a cruise. We did not stay here but our friends did. Their room was very nice and large. The best feature of the property is the deck overlooking the park and Nenana River. The views are stunning. Drinks, appetizers and casual meals are served there.
- a number of restaurants, elegant to casual - deck overlooking park & river - hot tubs with views - complimentary shuttle service - Park tours depart from here (We stayed at the Denali Bluffs and had to meet our bus at the Mercantile) - music dinner theatre - beauty salon - tour desk - large gift shop - health spa Theme: HotelPrice: US$120-180 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averagePhone: 800-426-0500Directions: A mile from the park in the Glitter Gultch area

Grande Denali Lodge by annk We did not stay here but visited and had dinner one evening. The Grande Denali Lodge is located one mile up a windy road. The view at the top is spectacular....a panorama of the area. A little more expensive than the Bluffs but it looks like it's worth it. Alpenglow Restaurant is shown facing south. Rooms face west towards the park.
- spectacular views - good restaurant with exceptional views - the largest guest rooms in the Denali area - frequent shuttle service to "Glitter Gultch", the Visitor's Center, mercantile. - Peak Experience Theater - Alaska owned and operated Theme: HotelPrice: US$120-180 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: George Parks Hwy, milepost 238.2Phone: 1-866-683-8500Directions: Just north of the park entrance, dirt road on the right.Website: www.denalialaska.com

Riverbed in Denali National Park by karenincalifornia The downside of the wilderness lodges in the Kantishna area is the expense. You don't have to pay a lot of money to experience Denali. The backpacking experience looks fabulous, and someday I would like to go back and try it. Denali is divided up into 87 backcountry units and some have quotas. You'll need to get a permit. Here is a link to the information : Backpacking in Denali You'll be assigned a unit by the National Park, given a map, permit and information specific to the unit, and off you go. The Park shuttle bus will drop you off at your stop, and you head out. Don't expect trails. You may very well be walking across river beds and tundra. Just pick a spot and set up your tent. Some units are used far less than others and are more remote. Be sure to read about the experience required to backpack into the unit of interest to you.
Click on this grid map for descriptions and photos of the 87 different units. Backpacking Grid Map in Denali This page and grid map also give you an excellent idea of the differences in terrain in the various parts of this huge map.

Denali Backcountry Lodge, Denali National Park by karenincalifornia If you want to stay in the deep heart of Denali and aren't backpacking, you have three options - North Face Lodge, Kantishna Roadhouse and Denali Backcountry Lodge. All are located in the Kantishna area at the end of the Park road. The trip to get to the end of the road takes about 4-6 hours by shuttle. We stayed at Denali Backcountry Lodge and very much enjoyed our stay.
Because the three hotels have limited accommodations, and there is no other accommodation or town close by, you will not deal with any crowds here. It was such a delight to have a huge part of a National Park basically to ourselves. The Lodge was very comfortable, the food (served family style) was quite good, and the staff were excellent. We had the good fortune of being assigned to two of the best rooms. Living right, I guess. We had two of the newer rooms facing the river. It was heaven to listen to the river at night. All rooms seemed nice and well cared for, but we were lucky, lucky, lucky. I would definitely stay here again. Would-be rescuers at Denali Cabins by karenincalifornia In my Warning Tips, I said do not stay at Denali Cabins at the Park entrance. Stay anywhere but here. Here's why. The Cabins were very short staffed and in fact had fired most of their staff the week before. (Not evident until we had a series of mishaps.) When we checked in we were told to go into the dining room for an orientation and some complimentary wine. How hospitable, we thought. But after we drank our wine, we were told that the free wine was not meant for us, and they made us pay for the wine. Ok, not so bad. Rather funny, really. But then we went back to our room to freshen up and tried to leave our room for dinner. The door knob wouldn't work and we couldn't get out. We hollered at our kids through the window to open up the door from the outside, but that didn't work either. We had to climb out the window, which had a good 4 foot drop to the ground. More mishaps followed. During dinner, I sat on my glasses and broke them, but knew I could do a temp fix job with some scotch tape. I went to the front desk and asked to borrow a one inch piece, but was told by the desk clerk that her management did not provide her with tape. She held up an empty tape dispenser in case I should be doubting her word. She was kind enough to give me her very last paper clip and rubber band, which I used to fashion a make shift (but very unfashionable) hinge for my broken glasses.
After a couple of hours, a maintenance guy came around and said the doorknob was broken but he didn't have any tools. (What kind of maintenance guy is that?) So the staff said they would move us to another room that clearly wasn't regularly used and they offered to transfer all our bags through the window. We checked out the other room and were alarmed by the condition of the space heater and the strange smell in the room. Not to mention it was 90 degrees in there. Concerned about being asphyxiated by carbon monoxide and/or roasted to death, we insisted they fix the doorknob to our first room. Miraculously tools showed up. Doorknob was fixed. At 11:30 pm we heard voices under our bed. Somehow the maintenance guy had left his two-way radio under our bed. While it is scary enough to think even momentarily that someone is under your bed when you are your husband are in it, it was even scarier to think the maintenance guy didn't even have his radio with him for several hours. Room at Denali Backcountry Lodge by karenincalifornia This picture shows the interior of our room at Denali Backcountry Lodge. The room is simple but very comfortable. We had a king sized bed (our kids had two queens), the rooms have beautiful pine paneling and wall to wall carpeting, and showers in the bathroom. Our room opened onto a deck that overlooked the river. The Lodge would not guarantee that both our rooms were next to each other, but they certainly did their best to accommodate us. On the first night, only one other room separated us. On the second night they moved us to the room that adjoined our kids' room (but they couldn't find the key to the adjoining room, so they weren't really adjoining). This was when I learned how noisy our children are when they are together in the same lodge room. The first night, they were next to honeymooners. I was horrified. Sorry, Honeymooners, whoever you were!
Ceiling fans, fairly large window looking to the outside, outside entry, spacious, very quiet at night (except for our kids).

Denali Backcountry Lodge, Alaska by karenincalifornia Here is picture of the surroundings around Denali Backcountry Lodge in the Kantishna area. As you can see, the area is not heavily forested. Kantishna is in the middle of the tundra, set in the middle of thousands of acres of low growing brush such as blueberry bushes and low bush cranberry bushes. After only a few hours a being here, you will come to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the tundra.
Kantishna is a former gold mining district located in a valley that opens up to a vast flat tundra to the west. Mt. McKinley is to the south. There are no moutains north of this valley until you reach the Brooks Range which is hundreds of miles away.

Living room, Denali Dome Home, Healy, AK by pchamlis, 3 more photos ** Note : This tip is from a long-ago trip to Alaska (1999). However, I have revisited this page and updated, making sure that the information is still valid. The same people run this b&b as ran it when we visited. I'm sure you'll like it. ** This B&B is in Healy, which is about 7 or 8 miles from the entrance to the Denali National Park. A large family home, the Denali Dome house (as its name suggests) is a geodesic dome house offering wonderful hospitality and outstanding views of beautiful north-central Alaska.
Very helpful and friendly hosts and a family atmosphere. Anne and Terry Miller, along with their children Edwina, Bart and Sarah, have defined a true family resting place with their Denali Dome Home. Among the more homey points about the Miller's home are: (1) My daughter Sara enjoyed helping the owner (Terry) and his daughter (also named Sarah) chase Mooses out of the yard each morning (2) We were told to "help ourselves" to whatever we wanted or found in the refrigerator. (3) Terry met us each morning at breakfast and simply said "what do you want"? Among our favorites were the spicy little sausages that he called "moose nuggets". I saw the package...they were pork! He also made excellent hotcakes. (4) In true Alaskan home tradition, everyone leaves their shoes at the door. You walk around the house in your sox. Denali Grizzly Bear Cabins & Campground by mrclay2000 This little enclave is nestled against the Nenana River about eight miles south of the Denali entrance. Located at Milemarker 231 of the Parks Highway, you will find a small convenience store full of overpriced sodas and snacks and lunch-type items to carry back to your tent or cabin. Across the highway is the McKinley Village with its lodge and numerous "conveniences," which disqualifies the area for "roughing it" in the wilderness. Expect resort prices for your space here, and try to get out of your car once in a while.
Situated by the fast-moving glacially-silted Nenana River, which offers rafting tours on different classes of rapids.
