Happy Hour

Every afternoon at 4:00 pm, Delani Backcountry Lodge hosted a happy hour with free appetizers in the upstairs library. We really enjoyed these happy hours - not just because of the wine and free food - but because this was the time to chat with the Lodge guides and other guests and hear about their daily excursions. We came to look forward to these afternoons because we got great ideas for the next days' activities. A representative from Kantishna Air Taxi also shows up and will take flightseeing reservations for the next day or two.

I believe the other two lodges in Kantishna have the same afternoon programs.

A View of the Room

This picture shows the interior of our room at Denali Backcountry Lodge. The room is simple but very comfortable. We had a king sized bed (our kids had two queens), the rooms have beautiful pine paneling and wall to wall carpeting, and showers in the bathroom. Our room opened onto a deck that overlooked the river.

The Lodge would not guarantee that both our rooms were next to each other, but they certainly did their best to accommodate us. On the first night, only one other room separated us. On the second night they moved us to the room that adjoined our kids' room (but they couldn't find the key to the adjoining room, so they weren't really adjoining).

This was when I learned how noisy our children are when they are together in the same lodge room. The first night, they were next to honeymooners. I was horrified. Sorry, Honeymooners, whoever you were!

Unique Quality: Ceiling fans, fairly large window looking to the outside, outside entry, spacious, very quiet at night (except for our kids).

A Stay in the Tundra

Here is picture of the surroundings around Denali Backcountry Lodge in the Kantishna area. As you can see, the area is not heavily forested. Kantishna is in the middle of the tundra, set in the middle of thousands of acres of low growing brush such as blueberry bushes and low bush cranberry bushes. After only a few hours a being here, you will come to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the tundra.

Unique Quality: Kantishna is a former gold mining district located in a valley that opens up to a vast flat tundra to the west. Mt. McKinley is to the south. There are no moutains north of this valley until you reach the Brooks Range which is hundreds of miles away.

This is out in the boonies

If you want to stay in the deep heart of Denali and aren't backpacking, you have three options - North Face Lodge, Kantishna Roadhouse and Denali Backcountry Lodge. All are located in the Kantishna area at the end of the Park road. The trip to get to the end of the road takes about 4-6 hours by shuttle. We stayed at Denali Backcountry Lodge and very much enjoyed our stay.

Unique Quality: Because the three hotels have limited accommodations, and there is no other accommodation or town close by, you will not deal with any crowds here. It was such a delight to have a huge part of a National Park basically to ourselves. The Lodge was very comfortable, the food (served family style) was quite good, and the staff were excellent.

We had the good fortune of being assigned to two of the best rooms. Living right, I guess. We had two of the newer rooms facing the river. It was heaven to listen to the river at night. All rooms seemed nice and well cared for, but we were lucky, lucky, lucky.

I would definitely stay here again.

Under Construction, Please check back

Under construction, please check back.

This is the only place to stay within the park itself, if you don't want to camp.
