    And a better view....

We did not stay here but visited and had dinner one evening. The Grande Denali Lodge is located one mile up a windy road. The view at the top is spectacular....a panorama of the area. A little more expensive than the Bluffs but it looks like it's worth it.

Alpenglow Restaurant is shown facing south. Rooms face west towards the park.

    Unique Quality: - spectacular views
    - good restaurant with exceptional views
    - the largest guest rooms in the Denali area
    - frequent shuttle service to "Glitter Gultch", the Visitor's Center, mercantile.
    - Peak Experience Theater
    - Alaska owned and operated

Directions: Just north of the park entrance, dirt road on the right.

    A view from the top

The lodge, which is brand new, is built high on a hill and has great views of Denali. I'd recommend it more for its location than anything else. Its about a mile or so from the park entrance and offers transportation to the park and other activities. The prices are comparable to the other lodges and hotels in the area, there is an onsite restaurant and shuttle service to various area activities.

    Unique Quality: see photo

Directions: watch for the sign indicating the turnoff from the highway

Breathtaking views

by annk about Alpenglow Restaurant - Grande Denali Lodge

Restaurant sits perched above a cliff overlooking the park and surrounding area. Views are outstanding even if you are not seated next to a window as the center section is raised.

Prices can be high but there are very good specials. I had the beef brisket which included soup or salad, entree plus vegetables, and a dessert for $19.95. Food was very good! Service was excellent.

Just outside the park....the resort area

by annk

The resort/hotel area is located just outside the park entrance road on Highway 3. There are a number of hotels, restaurants, stores, adventure activities such as river rafting and helicoptor tours. The area is named "Glitter Gultch" and from what I hear it can be very congested during the peak summer months. We were a little early in the season and did not encounter crowds.

The highest building up the mountain is the Grande Denali Lodge that has fantastic views. Photo was taken from the Horseshoe Lake trail.

Alpenglow restaurant

The restaurant at the Grande Denali Lodge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was good but unremarkable. The salmon and halibut were fresh, but I ordered one of them seared (can't remember which meal) and it was fully cooked. They did have a nice selection of Alaskan Amber beers as well.

There are some nice views from here of the park and the mountain, on good weather days. I had a bowl of hot clam chowder after the river rafting excursion. It was great, but that might have been because it was so hot and I was still shivering.

Denali national park

I'd welcome advice on where to stay in Denali in July, no camping. Is it better to stay near the park entrance or backcountry, will be arriving by rail. How long should one spend in Denali - is four days too long?

I'll try to answer your questions -- even though you've answered one yourself

If you don't want camping, you MUST stay near the entrance.

Denali's main attraction is its almost complete lack of facilities. You could spend weeks backpacking here, but that doesn't seem what you're looking for. Two days of going out on the bus (and back) would probably be enough for viewing wildlife and wilderness scenery.

If you're arriving by train, and don't want to camp, I strongly recommend getting reservations at Denali Lodge. There is a lot of lodging just outside the entrance, but you don't want to waste time hiking from your lodging to the bus pickup point.

For lodging, the only options you have are the motel facilities near the entrance. There's really now town, just a grouping of lodging facilities. We stayed at the Grande Denali Lodge and enjoyed it a lot. I think it's the only hotel with a view, which is a view of the hotels below as the Grande Denali Lodge sits up on a hill. Or, the Princess lodge is nice too. Although any lodging will do. As for the number of nights, I guess that depends on what you plan to do. Generally, I think two nights is sufficient. Day one, arrive and spend the night. Arrive early enough to attend the Cabin Nite Dinner show. Next day, take a bus trip into the park. You return late, so spend the 2nd night too. Next day, go on to your next destination. That's my recommendation.
