Nature and a bit of shopping
by spintobecca
Eagle River has a Walmart, along with the usual fast food and gas stations. Small boutiques offer bits of daily life available to pack away and take home. You can go camping in town, a lovely campground situated on the river and there is a nature center with hiking trails.
Great Parks/Sunlight

Eagle River has many great parks open to summer time activities. Notice the long shadow in this picture? It was taken at almost 10:00 at night. The long Alaskan "midnight sun" makes anything possible!
Winter Customs Tip
by spintobecca
You can tell much about an Alaskan by how they drive when the first snow hits. A longtime Alaskan will slow down and alter their driving habits to accomodate the new icy conditions. People new the area will continue to drive as though the roads were optimal, and will end up in accidents.
Winter Packing List:
by spintobecca
Bring whatever you feel like getting wet with snow. Duffel bags work wonders. Shoes: If you don't plan on "hiking" you can get away with tennis shoes. I wear open toed high heals all season, people shovel their walk ways! Gloves and something to cover your face (read: scarf). Anchorage fashion is basically whatever Seattle was wearing last year.
Summer Packing List

As with winter, bring whatever you don't mind getting scuffed up! Clothing, it's going to be in the 70s, so bring shorts, light weight pants, miniskirts if you are going to Koots (Guys you can bring miniskirts too, but don't wear them to Koots). Footwear should be activity appropriate. Polarfleece vests are perfect. If you are worried you won't be equipped, relax there are many malls for REI gear etc...
