The Wedgewood Hotel is an apartment complex! It was built for the pipeline workers and their families, who would be staying long-term. We had 2 bedrooms, a living room, and a fully equipped kitchen. All the buildings have WI-FI. There is a nice restaurant and a cafe.
The place is so large that their on-call shuttle takes you around the complex if you don't want to walk. Hourly shuttles also take guests on a loop that includes stops at the U. of Alaska Museum, Pioneer Park and downtown. .
Unique Quality: The hotel complex is adjacent to a wildlife refuge with a nature trail. An on-site lecture hall has programs several nights per week. The night we were there, we could listen to an Iditarod musher or a naturalist with a snowy owl.
The on-site car museum has 80 antique cars, each accompanied by the fashions of the time. (Admission $4 for guests.)
We stayed at Bear Lodge at Wedgewood Resort as part of a Princess Tour of Alaska following a cruise. While the room we stayed in was very nice, we were very disappointed in that we felt as if we were staying in an apartment complex in a residential area which was not the nicest. We were disappointed that the tour company placed us in this type of accomodation which, while it might be satisfactory for someone in town on business who planned to stay for a while, did not feel like "vacation".
The Wedgewood Resort is a sprawling apartment complex that has been split into apartments and suites you can rent by the night. We spent 3 nights there in 2004 and were quite happy with the place.
Two bedrooms, one bath with fully equipped kitchen and a small balcony off the living room.
A little further from UAF than we had expected - about a 20 minute drive.
