Travel Tips for Girdwood

A long history

by kaloz

Girdwood has been around for a long time in Alaskan terms. This scenic spot has been mined and forested since the early part of the last century. Some of the remnants of that by-gone time still remain to be discovered by the traveller. The original townsite was near the Girdwood Station Mall, but was moved because it was in the flood plains of the Tunagain Arm, and got flooded at high tides. Today there is a shopping area off the Seward Highway near the old townsite. They "filled" the land, though at big water, it can come close to the roadway. The new townsite is further from the plains in a forested patch and closer to the mountain.

Alyeska in the summer

by kaloz

I first visited Girdwood in August on my travels with Peggy and Dianne. The weather was fabulous, hot and sunny. They coundn't believe they were wearing shorts in Alaska. Even on the mountain it was beautiful. Girdwood lays on the charm no matter when you visit, summer or winter. Enjoy the friendly people and the great scenery. Then stay for some of the excellent food.

A Dog Friendly Town

by kaloz

There are lots of dogs in Girdwood, and many are unleashed, so do be careful while driving.

There are even dogs is some of the shops. This shot is taken inside the "Great Alaskan Tourist Trap" which is located on the old Girdwood Townsite. Connie runs the shop while Chris leads snowmobile tours.

Dirty Dogs

by kaloz

Dogs are abundant in Girdwood, and most are unleashed. This means that they can go and get themselves pretty dirty. If you are travelling with you beloved pet and want him fresh for the rest of your travels, stop by and see Cara at "U Dirty Dog" on Girdwood's Town Square. Cara will give your dog a bath.

She also carries foods and suppliments for your pet.

Tandem Parasailing

by RickinDutch

Available through the concierge at the Alyeska Prince Hotel or direcet with Alaska Paragliding, this looks like a great activity. I had some friends decide to do this at the last minute while we were attending a reception at Seven Glaciers. Yes, alcohol was involved!
The safety briefing and waiver signing takes long enough that you're almost sober though.
You don't really jump off a cliff, it is more like a fast sprint down a fairly steep slope.

Usually runs $185, but they paid $100 each as it was a last minute thing. They both raved about the experience for days afterwards. Really was a great ride down the mountain and they have never killed anyone - so they say. All gear is provided - wing, helmet, harness, parachute. Just bring some gumption.
