When in Alaska, rough it! If you need to take a break though, I would suggest Glacier Bay Lodge in Glacier Bay. They have fishing trips you can go on and the people are very friendly...

Fly into Gustavus, go to Glacier Bay Lodge. Camping is free or stay at the lodge. Do the day cruise for you will see everything a 5 day cruise sees in just one day on their high speed catamaran. Trust me . I worked on it 2 seasons. You will cruise past some slow 5 and 7 day high dollar cruise ships and you will smile as you stop at all the great sites close up and mere pocket change . Kayaking. fishing, whale watching, camping.

We are planning in 2006 a trip to Alaska. We are sixty and have quit a lot of travel experience, we come from overseas.
Does anyone has experience in visiting Glacier bay. What is the cheapest way to get there ? Is it a must, of are there better alternatives ?
Thank you so mutch for reading this

We just returned from this wonderful trip to Alaska and GB is one of our favor location. We took the ferry from Auke Bay Harbour, Juneau to Bartlett Cove.
Stayed at the Glacier Bay Lodge for one night and took the GB tour the next day,
and returned to Auke Bay in the late afternoon. I do not know of a less expensive atlernative but I will definitely recommend this trip. The saving can come from choosing to camp and bring your own food.

Hi, thanks for your reaction.
I have a few more questions:
How did you get to Juneau, by boat, car?
Did you book the ferry, the hotel long in advance?Did you book by mail or by
a travel-agency ?
Thanks,
Greta

I arrived at Juneau by air from Anchorage. There is only two ways to Juneau, by air or by sea. I rented a car to travel in Juneau but it can be done without it.

I did not book well in advance so I ended up paying a higher price for hotel. There are more options for the ferry. We travelled on the Alaska State Ferry, and if you want a cabin, you need to book well in advance. 2 months for the peak season.

I book everything direct on internet or call.
When do you intend to visit Alaska? Avoid the peak season will save you about 15 - 25%.

We intend to go in june 2006 for 4 weeks.
Therefore we are looking for travel-options that are reasonable priced, we do not need luxurious accomodations.
Thank you sofort for all your informations !
