    Nice, Clean and affordable

    by

The Denali Park Hotel is really a motel. The rooms were clean and good for the price. It's not a high-dollar resort but if you're enjoying the area you shouldn't be in the room for much time (other than sleep).

Unique Quality: The office/lobby is inside an old rail car. Right off the highway at MM 247, it's easy access to both Healy and Denali as well as the Denali Outdoor Center (great rafting trip).

Directions: Entrance is just on the south side of the motel on Otto Lake Rd

Travel Tips for Healy

by Summerhope

Go see Denali Park. Keep your eyes open for animals; if you walk or hike, make noise so you don't surprise any bears. Bring lots of mosquito repellent! Healy has a coal mine that will do tours also. The best thing about living here is that I can go for a drive, hike, walk, or exploring and won't be hindered by 'private property' or fences, or regulations. And I love it being daylight all night long (for most of the summer)!

"Great rock and fossil hunting"

Healy is a great place to look for really cool rocks such as jade. It's also a great place to go fossil hunting. There is an old tippet that you can explore, but be careful as some areas are unstable and NOT maintained. I suggest walking the perimeter and hiking back some.

"Again, favorite secret campsite"

There is a picture similar to this one of the lake on my homepage. You definitely need a 4x4 to get back to this area. So peaceful and quiet...

"Parks Hwy Couch"

There used to be this couch off of the side of the Parks Highway, that people kept adding teddy bears and other stuffed animals to for several years. I noticed it was gone in 2004...

Halloween at Healy

"Just a night............"

We stopped for the night in Healy as it had been a long day for us already and the roads were icy so I didn't want to push on to Fairbanks which was still 112 miles icy miles away. The skies were clear which would make for some good Northern Lights viewing....I hoped for spectacular but had an average evening of viewing them.

Wildlife along the highway

"Always STAY inside your vehicle!"

By all means, do NOT leave your vehicle to photograph animals unless you are certain they are a safe distance away...especially bears and moose!. You can still take great and interesting photos from safely inside your vehicle!

"Very hungry after a long hibernation"

Bears are often foraging for berries, roots and plants, small animals and such. However, often times they take down moose calves, full grown moose, and such. It is never good to be near a fresh 'kill' or between the hunter and its prey.

"Moose on the "Lookout""

Many moose are wary at this time of year...especially because many of the newborns are taken by bear in May & June.
