Camp on the longest road extending into the sea
All along the Homer Spit are campgrounds and places to park a truck and a camper. I'm not even sure if you need to be in an official campground. The lighthouse in this photo is really the Salty Dog Saloon, an institution. I wanted to go there, but we didn't have time. It's been written up by other VTers and sound like a blast!
For much more scenic environs, take a water taxi from Homer over to the Kachemak Bay State Park. There is a beautiful primitive campground (tents only) right on the shore. See my Kachemak Bay State Park page.

Camping on Homer Spit
Instead of staying at one of the hotels, many people simply pitch their tents along the Homer Spit.

Camping on the Spit
We didn't stay at the campground, but at the Bidarka Inn Best Western, Peggy and Diane made the reservations. The Best Western was not my favorite place to stay, and there are many choices available in Homer.
This flagpole is a famous site in Homer. For more information on the camping, please visit Worldtrekker's Homer Page

Homer's beach camping
You camp right on the beach -- great view, with the sound of the surf so close.
Unique Quality: Close to restaurants and bars. Great walking on Homer Spit -- many things to see.

Homer Spit Campground
Unique Quality: Close to restaurants, the Salty Dawg, Lands End resort, and the boardwalk shops. Showers, restrooms, electric hookups, laundramat. You can judge for yourself from the picture - not necessarily your ideal camp spot but I found it to be the best option as far as camping goes. This pic was taken early in the morning. It had been really stormy and WINDY! That should be obvious. This is the scene I woke up to... There was a kitchen tent set up the night before... Where was it?? I ended up finding it a mile up the beach full of seaweed, crabs, and a shrimp that had been washed into it from the high tide. NICE catch!! So, if you're camping here, make sure your tent is pegged in securely or has some weight in it to hold it against the wind. If you have a kitchen tent, it would be better to set it up in the parking spot. Also - make sure you set up above the high tide line... otherwise you might end up waking up to sea creatures nipping at your toes. :)
