Juneau's hostel
Quite a nice little hostel, right in the downtown of Juneau. The hostel is quite clean and run by volunteers. This makes is very affordable! The main level has a lovely living room with an always busy free internet computer and lots of seating. There is a nice kitchen and dining room table. Upstairs are women's dorms and downstairs are the men's. Each visitor is assigned a chore upon arrival.
The downside of this hostel is that it closes completely from 9 am until 5 pm and everyone MUST get out. Time to hit the Silverbow Bakery or the downtown library on rainy days.

Juneau Internation Youth Hostel
I stayed once. They are strict but the place is clean and cheap. Great bet for solo travelers looking for a place to stay.
Unique Quality: They have a curfew.
They expect you do to a chore.

Helpfulness
Convenient and Inexpensive
Juneau Hostel is clean and well managed. It's located at 614 Harris Street. From downtown just walk up Franklin St, then turn right on 6th till you reach Harrison.
Besides dorm rooms, it has a shared kitchen, dining room and other facilities like most hostels. The best part is the 24-hour free internet. But it's also the only hostel I've ever stayed to require daily chores from its paying guests. Every guest will get assigned some simple tasks such as cleaning shower room, etc. Perhaps that's how it's able to keep the price low. I paid $10 per night in May 2002, which is extremely low considering things are usually more expensive in Alaska than in the lower 48.
