Travel Tips for Juneau
Juneau and cruiseships
by tompt
You can't miss the cruiseships when you are in Juneau. People coming from these large ships often don't know where they are and what they are doing here. They just went on land because everybody did go.
A good example is a dutch man who was pleased to hear his own language and started a conversation. He was on the ship for two weeks and he knew they made several stops, but he didn't know where and when. He loved the ship because they had a show every night.....
The shop people start asking you from what ship you are, and when we replied we were in a minivan, they looked at us like we must be crazy.....

-Visit St. Theresas Chapel and make a picknick there, watch the whales pass by and watch the sea-lions otters and all the other animals who life there and feel one with nature and God, even when it's cold! (See the picture below)
-Visit the Mendenhall Glacier!.
-Walk arround the town and visit the Naa Kahidi Theatre at the harbour where the cruise ships anchor. Local native people tell stories about their tribe life.
- There are several trails you can do, I only did one but it will be in my memory forever.
Fishing Charter Boat Operations
by KodiakKristine
My son, and many of his friends, have crewed for Juneau fishing charter operators. Beware of the sign on the boat that says "A whale can tip this boat, but only YOU can tip the crew!" A little known fact is that many captains actually make the crew SPLIT the tip money with them! Always carry a couple of $20 bills that you can personally palm off to the crew, if you feel they've done a good job cleaning your fish, etc. (And try not to let the captain see you!)
Cold and Wet!
by emilienoelle
Juneau is located in a temperate rain forest, which means that it rains there almost every day. When it doesn't rain it looks like it COULD rain, and then, it rains. It also never really gets very warm there, even at the height of summer. The upside to that though is that it also doesn't get AS cold as the rest of Alaska in the winter.
No matter when you go you will need a warm coat and rain gear like a raincoat and umbrella and boots. If you're planning on hiking note what I said above, but you should also bring some bear repellent. Bears are everywhere here and they aren't that afraid of people, especially if they are hungry. Lots of wolves live here, too, but they tend to avoid people.
Combat Fishing at False Outer Point
by Elli99fh
There are lots of King Salmon caught here. You cast right off the beach. While I was there, one guy caught 3 nice kings in about 15 minutes. Be careful, though, it is crowded and sometimes hard to find a good place to stand to cast. Bring a casting pole with 20lb test, 1½ oz lead, 18" leader, herring. You can get gear at Western Auto in Auke Bay. They have an excellent fishing/outdoor department upstairs.
