Where's a good bar?
by medford2
Now that you guys helped me find my hat, I need a good bar that's not a tourist trap (if there is such a thing). Just a quiet place to enjoy a beer or 3 before I get back on the ship.

Yep...probably don't serve the local beer you'll find in a Ketchikan bar, but they're only about $6 each, and I can rub elbows with some genuine tourists.

Ketchikan was once the beer bar capital of Alaska, but the tourist trade took over with all the cruise ships, so now it is hard to find many local bars but more a mix of tourists. The Arctic Bar may not be quiet but more locals show up here than other bars in town. I mentioned this bar in your Alaskan hat quest. http://www.arcticbar.com/

Thanks. I'll have to stop in there to at least check that hat out. Don't think the Missus would want to be seen with me if I wore it though.

Fat Stan's is a good one - located near the logging show. Often see the mayor there :)
Travel Tips for Ketchikan
Things are Bigger in Alaska
by emilienoelle
They say that all things are bigger in Texas, but I think the Alaskans might have one-upped them, at least when it comes to some types of wildlife and plants. In Ketchikan, because of the vast amount of rainfall and the extended hours of sunlight during the summer months, things tend to grow rather large. This includes trees, which as you would imagine grow to incredible heights, but also farmed products such as pumpkins (some of the world's largest pumpkins have been from here, weighing over 1000 pounds). Some animals also fit into this category, like the slug in the photo. This sucker was at least 7 inches long! Cute, isn't it?

City Dock
by mcpangie
You'll get some of the best views of Ketchikan from on deck of a cruise ship. You'll be able to pick out the places to go before you can leave the ship.
The shops on this extended portion of the City Dock are designed for tourism. There are restaurants, art galleries, souvenier shops, that will keep you busy enough that before you know it the cruise ship will be blowing it's horn to remind you to reboard.
4th of July In Ketchikan
by mcpangie
Every year something special is going on at 4th of July. There is usually a parade. One year some Scottish Bag Pipe players and highland dancers were in town at the city park. This picture shows the beauty of the City Park in Ketchikan. It is a tranquil, lovely area to sit a spell.
Understanding Totem Poles - Beaver

The sign says...
Beaver:
This important crest of the Haida is the subject of many legends.
- An open mouth
- Two large incisor teeth
- Stick held in mouth or fore-paws
- Cross-hatched pattern on tail
The Haida are one of the main tribal groupings within Southeast Alaska.
