Zuiderdam to Ketchikan June 2010 - What to Do?
by flredhead
Great Alaskan Lumberjack show looks like fun with kids. What about Ketchikan Totem Bight? Native American Center Museum? advice with 8 hours in town for party of ten ages 3 - 71.

The lumberjack show is good. They split the crowd into teams, so there is fun involvement.

There is a decent little natural history museum in Ketchikan, which is near the lumberjack show. We also did the trip to the Saxman native village, which was tacky at times (dances where they got the audience members to participate), but also interesting at times (got to see totem poles being carves and were taught about the meanings of the various symbols on the poles). Ketchikan was out least favorite of the Alaska towns in which we stopped. We thought that Juneau and Skagway were much more interesting.
Travel Tips for Ketchikan
Walk or ride your bike around...
by dzni
Walk or ride your bike around the town! Explore.. it's not a huge city, but you could probably get a nice workout seeing what there is to see. You'll either see some local (or even touristy, unfortunately) shops and just local residences on the hills. You have to eat seafood here... especially if you like salmon or crabs... it's going to be extremely fresh! Also, I highly reccommend staying in a bed and breakfast, it's a lot of fun. When the owner of the bed and breakfast yelled up to us saying that a pod of whales was going by (we could see the water passage from the kitchen). Likewise, when I looked out at one point and saw a dozen Bald Eagles circling over the water. (I included a picture other than the whale picture since they are hardly visible even with the picture in front of me here).
Take Pictures While Docking
by mcpangie
Thousands of visitors come to Ketchikan each summer on cruise ships. Some of the best pictures you'll get of the towns that you visit will be from the deck of the cruiseship. I love walking around on the docks. Here is a picture of Thomas Basin from a ship anchored at the City Dock.
Where Eagles Fly
by mcpangie
Or you'll see eagles out on the water getting food. This picture was taken not far from where the McDonald's drive-thru is at the Plaza, Ketchikan's mall.
Out in the Tongass Narrows the island that is visible is Pennock Island, the island that separates the Tongass Narrows into two channels right near downtown Ketchikan.
An Annoying Local Custom
by mcpangie
One of the most annoying "local customs" is some yahoos (just some, and it only took a few) were fond of chucking rocks at these beautiful orange fungi known as "Chicken of the Woods" along the hiking trails. It wasn't just kids, I went places kid's don't have access to without their parents and the fungi were still knocked down. It's like picking flowers in a National Park. If everyone picks one, soon there won't be any left for the people that follow. Hopefully you find picture-taking spots before other's spoil the beauty.
