Wild times at the Van Gilder

I was fresh out of high school in 1983 and back packed my way around Alaska. I ended up in Seward in early July and the old guy that had the hotel at the time "Frank" was quite a character. He let me stay in the hotel for 3 nights free of charge in exchange for helping install some in room sinks and the awning at the entrance to the hotel. I met the lieutenant Governor there during the 4th of July celebration. It seems as though a whole train load of partiers comes to Seward for the 4th and then goes back to Anchorage on the train. Anyway, it was a blast in Seward and Frank was hell on his employees!

Unique Quality: Bell at the end of the bar. Be careful if you ring it. You're buting a round for the house!

a pretty good deal

neat old building and a pretty good deal. rooms were ok, not fantastic. tv, not that we watched it much, was in the upper corner of the room on the same side as the headboard. almost impossible to watch. all in all, the service was acceptable, the room was clean, and the building had charector. the bathroom could have been better.

Unique Quality: had some neat historical pictures and neat antique furniture.

seward: nice building - nasty owners

What were the accommodations like?
"Where history meets the sea" claims the hotel slogan. Why? Because it''s located in a historic building from 1916 listed as a National Historic Landmark. The charm of the hotel lies not much in the architecture of the building but in its rooms - all spacious, bright and with brass beds and period antiques from the Victorian times! nasty owners that dot the hotel with ashtrays - just to arangue that it's a non smoker hotel when u try to light a cigarette. illogical!

Visit Downtown Seward

Downtown Seward is the old part of town. It is basically located at the south end of Fourth Avenue. There are several shops and restaurants, and even murals on buildings. The old railroad depot and the Alaska Sea Life Center are down the hill at the water's edge.
