The Ma Johnson's Hotel and McCarthy Lodge (same place, 2 buildings), is the real Alaska you dream about. Small town, more locals than tourists (only dozens of locals, but less visitors)! The Hotel is great. You feel like the town has not changed much since 1938! People and staff are very friendly and love to show off their town and talk about the locals' issues and lifestyle. The owners and staff will make sure every detail is perfect. Call ahead especially in July. There are only 20 rooms in the Hotel. Bathrobes and the other amenities are cool.
Staying inside McCarthy offers a few choices. We like the Ma Johnson's Hotel (which is part of the McCarthy Lodge). The "Lodge" is really a restaurant with guests staying in the Ma Johnson's Hotel building across the street. Both are very cool original buildings. It's like staying in an old western movie, but with luxuries in the wilderness. What is most amazing is that most of all the old stuff just stayed here when the last train left in 1938.
