 | Grand Canyon Hotels and Accommodations | Tips 1 - 10 of 96 | | | | | | Yavapai Lodge | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Yavapai Lodge is located about .8 km from the rim of the Grand Canyon, and is ideally situated away from the rim crowds, near the marketplace, and has bus service in front of the lodge's main building plus the rooms (they are a small distance away from the main building, about a 5 minute walk). The rooms are housed in several depressing-looking 70's era buildings. However, the rooms have been recently renovated, and have nice mission-style furniture, plus the temperature is electronically controlled. What I found strange, though, was they tried to make do with minimal renovations -- for example, the room sink had brand new fixtures, but the sink was the worn-looking original, plus the light switches were yellowed and old. The bed was very comfy, but the pillows could have done double-duty as pancakes. The bathroom has no heat, but you can turn on warm air via an ancient-looking timing dial and it comes out of a ceiling vent.
We found the staff very pleasant and helpful, plus the fridge in the room was extremely handy. The cafeteria serves pretty decent -- albeit-- cafeteria food, but we thought it was okay and ate most of our meals there. This was our first time to the Grand Canyon and were very impressed with how everything was organized to move people through efficiently. The bus service was excellent, and you do not need a car at all to get around the rim, unless going east on Desert View Drive. Overall, we were very happy with the Yavapai Lodge, and would return, as we got very good value for our money. We were suprised at the reasonable rates, considering the place is at the Grand Canyon. | | | | Thunderbird Lodge, South Rim, Grand Canyon, AZ: Comfortable accomodations at the South Rim | Tip Rating: | | | | |
All of the accomodations at the very edge of the South Rim (and the North Rim, for that matter) are managed by the US Park Service. There are a variety of comfort and luxury levels, with the El Tovar being the nicest and priciest. Not consequently, the El Tovar is always booked wayyy in advance. For a good family place to stay, good comfort and room at a decent price, I'd suggest picking the Thunderbird Lodge.
Location can't be beat. :) And, on the South Rim, having a place with a really good air conditioner is definitely a plus. The rooms are large enough to comfortably sleep a family of four, and there are several eating establishments within an easy walk. And, like all the South Rim accomodations, the world's greatest sunset is only about 20 feet outside your door. Walk out there in the evening and watch the sun go down. There will be 100s of people doing the same thing, but when ol' Sol sinks below the horizon, painting the sky a thousand different shades and hues, you'll be amazed at how quiet it gets. :) Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: South Rim, Grand Canyon, AZDirections: Just go to the South Rim and drive to the hotel area. ALL South Rim edge accomodations are at the same basic place.Other Contact: Contact the US Park Service

 | | | | El Tovar: A Historic Grand Canyon Hotel | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Reservations are made a year in advance for this historic Grand Canyon Hotel. Unfortunately, we didn't plan far enough ahead to have the oppoortunity to stay at El Tovar. When we visited Grand Canyon Village, I beelined here to see El Tovar. Upon entering the large lobby, numbers of people were gathered around the fireplace and seating areas in animated conversation. It was very windy and cold that day, so we were among those who wished to warm up a bit. The lobby was decorated in lodge-style, having a darkened interior seeming almost cave-like to me. To be honest, I don't usually appreciate this style, but it certainly was appropriate for El Tovar. However, lovely artwork of the canyon punctuated this area (picture 2) with color. Gift shops carrying high-quality clothing, leather accessories and gifts were located off the lobby. My husband and I wandered through this area, before moving on to see the dining room. An immense vase of assorted flowers welcomed you to the dining room. Huge windows to one side of the room afforded diners a view of lush treetops. There was a bustle of activity as the wait staff prepared to receive hungry patrons (picture 3), who were beginning to line up outside of the restaurant. If you think it would be wonderful to stay at El Tovar during a visit to the Grand Canyon, plan ahead. It just might be possible! Theme: HotelAddress: Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

 | | | | Best Western Grand Canyon Squire Inn: Grand Canyon Resort | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Since the park hotels were already full when I began working on our itinerary, I found the Grand Canyon Squire Inn after doing some internet research. We only needed accommodations for my husband and I, but it seemed a very good choice for families, as well. Grand Canyon Squire Inn is conveniently located 8-9 miles from the entrance to the Grand Canyon in the town of Tusayan. The Coronado, an elegant dining room which provided an excellent meal and service, was located off the lobby. A gift shop carrying many necessary items and souvenirs was also situated on the entrance level (It was chilly while we were visiting, so I had to purchase a sweatshirt here--it was on sale!) Bowling lanes and arcade/pool tables are just what the kids ordered! Our room was separate from the main lodge, but only a short distance away. The guest room was decorated in colors of the Southwest and offered a King size bed (or two Queens), cable tv, phone, coffee maker, iron/ironing board and clock/radio. It's always to my liking when the bathroom and vanity area are separate, so I was a happy camper in that regard! Extra blankets and pillows were on hand. Upon request, you can be provided: a rollaway bed (extra) child's crib, mini-fridge, luggage storage. We had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay at the Grand Canyon Squire Inn!
