The Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge has majestic rock cliffs and the Bill Williams River running through the Sonoran Desert. Its cattail-filled marsh harbors a wide variety of birds including several endangered species. It also has the only stand of cottonwood-willow forest still standing on the Lower Colorado River. The refuge offers a variety of recreational opportunities to include fishing, boating, and birdwatching.
We typically head to Parker, AZ where we can rent houses on the rver or to Laughlin, NV where we can stay on the water all day and party at the casinos all night. Both places are about 4 hours drive from Los Angeles.
As most of you know, I married an LA City Fireman....and since all firemen have boats it means that we spend a good part of the spring and summer at the river.
To get to Parker you must take Desert Center Drive. It is an 87 mile 2 lane road quite literally through the middle of the desert. There are no gas stations or rest stops...just you and the desert. This sign directs you towards civilization.
What do you get the man who has everything? Something priceless, like time well spent with friends. I surprised my dear husband by renting a huge house on the water and packing it with 14 of our dearest friends. Days were spent on the water, nights were spent eating like royalty.
Two things that are certain about our group is the love of beer and the love of good eats. There was no shortage of either.
These guys have all known each other for 25+ years. They are more like brother than friends...the two in the middle are my brothers.
While it was still a little early in the season to enjoy the water to its fullest a few of the guys braved the frigid waters...briefly..
