Sun Block -- SPF 30 or HIGHER!
by suzyav8trix
Sun Block -- even if you have a "base" tan or have an olive complexion, the Phoenix sun can be brutal. If you do not take precautions you will get a sunburn. Period. I highly recommend a waterproof sunblock, SPF 30 or even higher. After you get out of the shower in the morning, slather it all over your body, just like a moisturizer. Use about 1 oz or a shot glass-ful. Do this before you get dressed and you'll lessen your chances of missing a spot and give the sunblock a chance to soak in and properly bond with your skin. Don't forget the back of your neck and knees, the tops of your ears, and your lips -- you'll need a good sunblock for your lips, too. Wear a hat, too. You won't regret it. And large, dark sunglasses. You'll can feel like a movie star (think mirrored lenses) and still be protected. A tell-tale sunburn -- from the golf course, or the pool, or hiking, or whatever -- is a sure sign that you are a "tourist".
Saguaro Lake - Just outside of...

Saguaro Lake - Just outside of town is Saguaro River; a very scenic river that feeds into a lake (in the photos you can see Jamie standing in front of the lake). At the lake you can rent a boat and just spend a lazy day on the water enjoying the sun and tranquility.
The entire Phoenix area is just quite scenic. Coming from the east coast it was nice to see such open spaces.
Save room for the Sugar Biscuits
by jsav about Big City BBQ & Grill
This is the second location for the three owners who appear to have descended from points unknown just to improve the BBQ scene in Phoenix. One owner is from England, came here specifically to start a barbecue restaurant. A second owner is from New York and has a thick Brooklyn accent, and the third is an Executive Chef who grew up in Iowa, the pork capital of the world.
This new location in Mesa is much roomier than the first, has a bar, a nice ambience at night, and great food. All of the barbecue is great, pulled pork and beef brisket top the list. But, whatever you do, don't leave without ordering the sugar buscuits for dessert. I am totally addicted!

Climb Squaw Peak/Piestewa Peak
by dshinkle
Nestled in the very center of the valley of the sun is Squaw Peak/Piestewa Peak. This mountain provides a great hike and a beautiful view of Phoenix from the top.
It's not easy climbing the 1.2 mile trail and if you aren't used to the heat yet, do not attempt it. However, if you are in decent shape and want a nice challenge give it a try.
Get there early to get a parking space.
