Steelers Game
by emilie1972
Heading to Phoenix for the Steelers game on 9/30/07. Are there hotels close or convenient to the Cardinals Stadium?

Hello! Yes, there are myriad hotels (3 that I can think of) within 6-7 miles of the stadium (all freeway). All of these hotels are walking distance to plenty of restaurants and bars as well. Enjoy your stay and go Cardinals;)

They are developing the area near the stadium, so there's not as much there as there will be years from now. The west side was, until very recently, a dump that no one wanted to be associated with. However, the stadium is right off the Loop 101, which goes around the city (as the name implies) and has plenty of hotels, dining, etc. If you want a really nice place to stay, take the 101 about 25 miles northeast to the Tatum Ranch area (101 and 51). There is a JW Marriott and several other nice hotels there, and you'd be close to a lot of other attractions.
Travel Tips for Phoenix
Hiking and biking
by goingsolo
Phoenix has tons of hiking and biking trails for every level of fitness. Echo Canyon Recreation Area, where Camelback Mountain is located, and Squaw Peak Park, are two of the most popular. On any given Saturday or Sunday, you're likely to see Phoenix's physically fit residents hiking or jogging to the tops of the citys 1-2,000 foot peaks. This is one of the best outdoor cities due to a combination of weather and terrain. The parks of Phoenix are one aspect in which you'll want to partake.
Squaw Peak becomes Piestewa Peak
by goingsolo
In 2003, Squaw Peak was renamed Piestewa Peak in honor of Lori Piestewa, a Native American US soldier killed in Iraq. The name Squaw Peak had been controversial to many Native Americans due to the fact that it is believed to be a derogatory term. On the other hand, many Phoenix residents were upset by the name change, mostly because of the history surrounding the naming of the mountain and also due to the fact that residents felt that the renaming was politicizing the death of Ms. Piestewa and, in so doing, was ignoring the sacrifice of many Arizonans whose lives had been given to preserve freedom.
The mountain was so named 100 years before by its original surveyor. Squaw Peak Park, a Phoenix recreational area, was created around the mountain. The highway leading to the park was once called the Squaw Peak Parkway, is now named the Piestewa Freeway.
Much like McKinley/Denali, it is likely that the controversy will continue and the mountain will be known by 2 names.
Driving test
by HeidiR
We have recently moved to Phoenix from the UK. As we will be here for more than a year we had take the Arizona driving test which was interesting.
The driving test centre is very old fashioned, you show up take a number and wait. you will do eyetests andanswer some questions then you will do a written test. If you fail you can come back and do it again the next day.
The actual driving test was much more of a drive than a test. First you had to do a parellel park in an enormous space. You actually had 3 goes at this if you get it wrong. Then you drive out the centre do one left turn then all the other turns are right all the way back to the test centre. Probably drive about 5 or 6 miles. you do not have to do any other skills like emergency stops, reversing round the corner or either make a point of looking at the mirrors.
Kids are allowed to take their test here really young. while I was waiting for my test I heard someone ask how long does the driving trst takes, they where told about 50 minutes, 20 minutes for actual driving the rest for the parallel park!!!!!!!.
Very Good Food
by Hermanater about Red Sage
This place seems in an out of the way place in Gold Canyon. When we were there, the place was packed. The food was very good and the wait was about avearge. The menu had the typical American food and reasonable prices. I would not hesitate to eat there again. Everything was good that we ordered.
Pueblo Grande Museum
by lashr1999
Discover Hokum culture while inside the museum. Kids will like some of the interactive exhibits such as the design your own pots and going on a pretend dig. A 10 minute movie about Hokum culture should be seen before you go outside to see the actual ruins. The movie will help you imagine what life was like during these times. If you venture out without seeing the movie you will see the ruins out of context and they will probably bore you. This was the case for my mother who did not understand the exhibit since he was hard of hearing and her hearing aid battery was depleted. However, I enjoyed the exhibit. When outside I tried to imagine what the people who lived among these ruins did. While at the ancient ball court created 750-1200 AD, I tried to imagine the games they may have played. You can see recreated ruin which show what archaeologists think Hokum homes may have looked like.
Bottom Line: If you have an imagination or are intrigued by native American culture this exhibit will interest you.
