Go outside Phoenix and visit...
by Pavlik_NL
Go outside Phoenix and visit that what was there first: the desert. Then the miracle of Phoenix and Scottsdale being booming towns is even bigger. The desert is mercyless, but mankind has overwon (though by taking water from other area's that now start suffering from drought!). The name Phoenix can be accidently choosen, yet is definately a 'bird' that arises from ashes (or hot burning sand). Night with full moon at Scottsdale. So tranquil and silent, but with crickets tsjirping all around. The picture is from a postcard (Camel Butt) and reminds me of it.
White Tanks Regional Park
by DrexelDragon
White Tanks is on the east side of Phoenix, and from where I was staying it was about a 15-20 minute drive. From downtown, I'd say that it's about 45-50 minutes. It's not as popular as some of the other parks around Phoenix, but that just means there are less people to see while you're on the trail. 8) It had some decent hikes, and 2 that were pretty lengthy to the extent that there was a camping area. There a fair bit of rock that kids (and big kids at heart can enjoy scrambling around on).
car hire at Sky Harbour
by davesut
Not really a tip about phoenix, just a sharing of experience. First is there is a shuttle bus for all car hire, takes about 10 minutes and expect the buses to be full and therefore lines at the car hire base to be long.
I experienced the longest check in ever at 'Dollar' car hire as they made a number of attempts to extract more funds

Authentic German Bakery in Phoenix
by bilgeez about Old Heidelberg Bakery
This really isn't a restaurant per se, but they do have a small "kafe klatsch" area, and have fresh-made sandwiches "belegtes brot" to go and they sell German-style sausage and cheese, mostly made in Illinois, as well as their most delectable German-style breads and pastries. The family that owns this bakery is second-generation from, Heidelberg, of course, the daughters of the owners run the shop now and they are every bit as attentive and treat everyone who comes in as if they were their only customer, whether it's your first visit or your thousandth! (I'm pretty much in the latter group!)
The bakery also sells German magazines and greeting cards, so if you want to brush up on the latest gossip in Germany or want to find a card to send to a German friend, they will have these. Their "bauernbrot", light rye bread, is as good as any I've had in Germany. They also have awesome pumpernickle and dark rye and "brotchen" (rolls). As mentioned above, they have a large selection of "wurst", mostly from Illinois, some from California. They are also very authentic. Try the cervalat, a very tasty salami-style sausage. They also have Black Forest ham and others. They also offer a nice variety of cheeses, mostly American made, from Wisconsin or Illinois, that are very authentic to German and Swiss cheeses. They have a very good Ementhaler, that may be Swiss, and some very good other types of German-style, domestically produced cheese.
Of course, the pastries, are the crowning glory of this bakery. They have so many torts and struessels and such, I can't name them all, but they have them, and all are excellent!
The store is in east-central Phoenix and is open every day but Monday. They also close in summer for a few weeks for holiday. Call around the end of June to see when they will be shut for their vacation!
If you are German tourists that are homesick fuer deutsches Art Lebensmittle, this is the place to visit. If you want authentic German baked goods without having to go to Germany, this is the place to visit!
