Lookout Mountain Hike
by BruceDunning
This mountain stands alone as an isolated pinnacle in the North Mountain area. It is close by Piestewa and Stoney Mtns. The hike was not all the far, but the last 200 yards was steep climbing up to the crest on loose rock, and has a 400 elevation gain over only 1/2 mile. There also is a loop hike around the mountain, which I did 1/2 of that 3 miles.
Drive into Mexico
by HeidiR
Its quite common to drive from Arizona into Mexico (Rocky Point). The trip is about 230 miles one way (4 to 5 hrs). Rocky Point is about 60 miles into Mexico. Its the nearest place you can go to for the beach from Phoenix.
It is highly advicable to get Mexican Car Insurance before leaving Arizona. You can easily get it in the border towns of Why and Ajo.
Go there when hungry and short of money
by ostbarn about Hometown Buffet
Several in Phoenix Metro but I have only used the Scottsdale one. Very clean, all you can eat, choices change according to time of day (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner) price varies too from about $6 to$10. Ample seating, manager always around, table staff always cleaning, food very good quality. Two friends from England hardly ate anywhere else in 2 weeks. Breakfast, Eggs scrambled and or poached, bacon, hashbrowns, cornedbeef hash, sausages, mushrooms, biscuits(US style) and gravy, breaded chicken, tea.coffee, juices, toast and jam or marmalade or honey and the breakfast 'period' lasts for about 3 hours! Fill your boots! (sorry, no carryouts)
American dishes with a New Orleans twist
by spartan about Mimi's Cafe
The Mimi's Cafe dining experience is more than just good food. It's friendly, helpful people and the warm, comfortable atmosphere of home. They serve you classic American dishes, made from scratch, in a colorful, French New Orleans - inspired atmosphere. I have to recommend a couple items, first the Boeuf Français - beef dip Nu Awlins' style, roast top round 'Au Jus' on grilled sourdough French baguette with a side of fries. Now that's a huge sandwich!!! You may also want to try the 5-Way Grilled Cheese Sandwich - sourdough bread with cheddar, jack, swiss and mozzarella inside, grilled with parmesan outside (goooey and messy but oh so good) with a side of french onion soup.
The Phoenix Zoo
by seth0919
This zoo is quite different from many of the zoos on the east coast of the USA. This zoo covers much more wide open space and is a joy to walk through. It was really interesting to see some of the more 'local' animals, such as the mountain goats.
