Just for fun, read Carlos Costanada's 'Teachings Of Don Juan' to get a real flavor of the magic and mysticism available in the southwestern deserts. He spends a great deal of time with a Yaqui indian shaman (medicine man) along the Mexico/US border. It's an eye opener to read about this culture.
Once you start, it's impossible to come back!
World's Tallest Fountain
It doesn't seem to be a well-known fact, but the Phoenix area is home to the world's tallest fountain in the aptly-named Fountain Hills. About 30 miles northeast of the city on Highway 87, Fountain Hills is a small suburban and retirement town separated from the urban sprawl of the rest of the Valley.
The pond that is home to the fountain is in Fountain Park along Saguaro Boulevard about one mile north of Highway 87. Parking and admission are free, and the park itself is a beautiful, grassy and inviting enclave perfect for spending a cool winter's day in the sun. If you have kids, there is a playground adjacent to the lake.
The fountain runs every hour on the hour, and can reach over 500 feet when the winds are calm. If they're not though, you may get a little sprayed.

By air, as told, this could be a exquisit gateway to a South-Western States visit. Or by train, as Phoenix is connected to one of the famous East West railways (coming from Santa Fe).
Car, car, car or maybe by car. Other options are the automobile or you could bike or go by foot.
As told, our journey through this part of the U.S. of A. started at Phoenix to travel around Arizona and North to Utah. From here the road led back to Arizona and into Nevada. We ended up driving through California and finished in San Francisco.
Tip: in carrental the triangle Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas is free of drop-off charge when you drive Westwards!
Greasewood Flats .
It is cowboy bar/restaurant. You sit outside amidst burning firepits and singing cowboys. Dress is casual. You will think you are in the wild west. Bring a dollar and sign it with your name and state and stick it to the walls with the other 1000s. The chili burger is a full plate burger dripping with average chili, but it makes you feel like you are camping.
The Arizona Diamondback are Arizona's only professional baseball team. They also have one of the nicest stadiums in the league. Be sure to check them out.
