Is there accommodation for hikers near mountains?
by Hilz
Hi,
We are a group of 8 hikers coming from UK to visit AZ in April 07. We would like to get accommodation close to good hiking area. In Europe we would use youth hostels or mountain huts. That would be a room or two with bunk beds (say 4-6 beds per room). I don't know what would be the equivalent in the States.
The Superstition Mtn area looks amazing but we are flexible. We will have a couple of saloon cars rented from Phoenix Apt.
I'd be really grateful for any tips.
Many thanks
Your options are quite limited

For better or worse, almost NO mountain areas in the U.S., and in particular those on federal land in the western U.S., have hiker huts like you find in Europe or in the northeast U.S. Here's info specific to the Superstition Mountains:
www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/wilderness/wilderness-superstition-index.shtml
Note that this area is legally designated wilderness, meaning significant improvements of ANY kind, definitely including covered lodging, are forbidden. Here's more info on what "wilderness" means:
www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/wilderness/wild_Faqs.shtml
Thus, to visit the Superstitions (which I HIGHLY recommend, if you are willing to plan intelligently and appropriately), you must stay in either a hotel (with day hiking) or a campground. Campgrounds, mostly with minimal facilities, are available in the Tonto National Forest:
www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/recreation/rec-camping-index.shtml
or you can do desert wilderness hiking (NOT for neophytes to the desert!).
To hike via hikers huts or hostels in the mountains, you'll probably have to visit the northeast U.S. -- which I wouldn't recommend in April for mountain hiking.
Travel Tips for Phoenix
Phoenix is a very...
by acemj
Phoenix is a very sports-minded city. They have all the major professional sports as well as a city full of parks and placed to play.
This is a picture of my friend Paul scoring a goal! I went to the game to watch him play, because we played together in high school in San Diego in 1989! Wow, that's a long time ago. The weather was great and I got to talk with some other people who were watching the game. I was talking to two girls who attended Arizona State and both of them were from other states. They said that the Phoenix area has a ton of people who have moved from mostly cold weather states to enjoy the warmth.
That's actually pretty typical in the States. All of the southern states are packed with northerners who have either retired or transferred to escape the cold.
Mystery Castle - A Phoenix point of pride
by GlennPhoenix
Adjacent to South Mountain Park, Mystery Castle is a native stone castle that features 18 rooms, 13 fireplaces, parapets, many charming nooks and crannies, and is furnished with Southwestern antiques.
Be sure to take a guided tour and find out all the neat history about this castle made by hand out of recycled junk. Great to ad into your drive up south mountain.

Don't Miss the PROTEIN PANCAKES
by ViajesdelMundo about U. S. EGG
Great place for a small group brunch on Sunday. Plain decor, but good food, very full plates, lots of choices. Service is fast but if there is a short wait, as we had, there is a coffee pot available to pour your own.
Hours: 7 days a week; 6:30am - 2:30pm One of their specialties is whole wheat pancakes that are filled with blueberries as well as granola, cinnamon and almonds. OR, you can just have a 'half order' of pancakes together with a half order of a specialty casserole; I had the one with chorizo, potatoes, tomatoes !!
Soleri Bells
by elizabethsloane
Paolo Soleri is an architect who is creating Arcosanti, based on Soleri's concept of "Arcology," architecture coherent with ecology.
My daughter and I spent two hours at the Cosanti shop in Paradise Valley (North of Phoenix). She rang every bell until she found one she was satisfied with. It is a magical place and some day, I look forward to visiting Arcosanti.
I would not recommend ordering bells on line. Part of what makes the bells special is that each one has a distinct sound. Our carefully selected bells hang from our balcony as a reminder of our travels together.
