PHOENIX/SCOTTSDALE OBSERVATORY
by forestcloughs
Visiting late Feb early March for a week from the UK.
Does anyone know of an observatory near and best places to see cactii?
Thanks

For cacti, I recommend a drive north to Sedona. There is some beautiful scenery, including great Cacti, on the drive and at the destination. a stop at Montezuma's Castle is also interesting.
For an Observatory, try google, bing, yahoo or any other search engine

Usually we refer to "observatory" as either a solar or stellar observatory. Is that what you're looking for? If so, there are public programs at three observatories relatively close to Phoenix: Kitt Peak (directly south of Phoenix and west of Tucson), Mount Lemmon (northeast of Tucson) and the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff (150 miles north to Tucson). All have night programs. Kitt Peak and Lowell Observatories can also be visited during the day.
If you're looking to see a variety of cacti, Phoenix has one of the best botanical gardens in the country that is very worth the time and money. They have a wide variety of cacti, the majority of which are native to the Sonoran Desert. If you're looking for cacti and succulents in general in the "wild," you may want to head south to Tucson to Saguaro National Park's west unit. There's not only the namesake saguaro cacti (really the best place to see them), but also a variety of other succulents, such as the several varieties of cholla cactus native to the region, barrel cacti, prickly pear cacti, and others such as ocotillos, shindaggers, yuccas (in the higher regions) and the occasional, elusive agave. If you do go there, the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum offers a fantastic introspective on all flora and fauna native to the Sonoran Desert.

Although it is neither an observatory nor focused on cactus (although I am sure there are plenty around), Taliesin West (Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home, studio, and architectural campus) is on the north side of Scottsdale, so much close than the other locales...and a fascinating place to see, too, if you're into that sort of thing...

Travel Tips for Phoenix
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
by jumpingnorman
The Sky Harbor International Airport has 3 terminals (2,3, and 4), and the best thing I like about it is the free wireless internet and several electrical outlets around that I can just use to “recharge’ my laptop and other stuff.
It also has other services which include a rest area for pet owners and their pets, and an audio-visual paging system. Thirteen car rental companies offer their services all under one roof at the rental car Center which was opened in 2006, designed to deliver streamlined customer service.
They also have Starbucks for you coffee afficionados!
Whenever landing into Phoenix, I am always amazed at how huge my city is and how well-aligned the streets are. Maricopa County is truly one of the biggest!
Phoenix Coyotes
by snowsk8er
You like hockey, never been to a hockey game? Well if you're in the Phoenix area, and it's hockey season, try to make it to a Phoenix Coyotes game. They're now playing at the new state of the art Glendale Arena (soon to be renamed, I hope). Before, and after the game you can check out the new Westgate City Center, and have a beer at the Yard House, so you don't have to travel too far for a good time.
Let's go Coyotes! Might want to bring a sweater for the game, and a designated driver.
Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, see the stars!
by jumpingnorman
This is the famous Lowell Observatory with that historic 24" Clark Telescope which lets you see the moon, planets, star clusters and more! You can go to the center on Evenings, and no reservations are required. But viewing depends on what is in the sky and how the weather is.
Evening schedule is when it is best to view the stars - after dark: From Sept-May M, W, F, Sat 530PM-930PM, June_Aug 530PM-10PM.
Daytime programs include indoor multimedia about Lowell's research and the universe, given throughout the day, with historic tours conducted by the center. March-Oct 1015-1615 PM, Nov-Feb 1315-1615 PM. As of 2008, Adults $6, 5-17 yo $3 and students/seniors/AAA $5.
Go here to see the stars!
Best chili rellenos in town
by eurotraveler5 about Tee Pee Mexican
This is a classic Mexican restaurant that has been around for years. The decor hasn't changed much since we started going there in the early 70's, but the food is great and the price is right. Their specialty are chili rellenos, but enchiladas are good too.
5 & Diner 50's style diner
by Chiky about 5 & Diner (Chain)
Very diner like with menu changes every so often to keep up the pace and interest. Defintely diner food where you may want to blot your food to absorb the excess grease. Very fun with the waiters and waitresses dressed in 50's style diner gear down to the change belts. The restaurant is very small but fun because it looks like an old trailer! Smoking and non-smoking inside restaurant. Open to smoking on the patio. Open 24 hours at select locations. The Reuben Sandwich on wheat and an extra thick vanilla shake suites me fine!
