Traveling to Phoenix and want to see the Saguaro Cactus

by MontanaJim74

Ill be in Phoenix in the fall for a couple of days. I am hoping to see some Saguaro Cactus in the wild. I also may not have a car. Ive heard South Mountain Park has some cactus there. Is that true? Any other good places in the Phoenix area that I can see the Saguaro?

There are Saguaro Cactus all over the city. It is against the law to cut one down in the state of Arizona. So if a property has a cactus and wants to build, they either build around it or have to replant it somewhere else. If you do have a car just drive down any freeway 5 miles out of town and see all the cactus you want. Yes South Mountain Park does have cactus on or near the paths.

thanks for the info. I didnt know the saguaro was so common.

Is south mountain park a better place to take a desert hike than camelback mountain? Does anyone know what bus I can take to get to south mountain park from downtown (like near chase field or within a few blocks of there). How long of a trip is it? Thanks

Another option, although farther from downtown Phoenix, but way better for hiking is The Superstition Mountains, East of Apache Junction. Without a car though, bus routes won't get you close enough.

The valley bus schedule is here

I've hiked all over South Mtn and The Superstitions if you need more help! Yes, sahuaros are everywhere!! Have fun!

I just returned from the Phoenix area and there are Saguaro Cactus everywhere. It's a beautiful landscape - very different from any other I have ever experienced. We stayed at the foot of the Superstition Mountains and it was a gorgeous area. Apache Junction is about a 45 - 60 minuite drive from Phoenix but well worth the trip. You really are in the desert and away from the big city.

Travel Tips for Phoenix

things to bring or buy when you are here

by HeidiR

suitcase sandels and sports shoes i am sure you can get most things here. But a good moisteriser and suntan lotion is probably essential with the sun good camera Sunglasses(even when the sun is behind the clouds you will need them, especially when you are driving)

Prescott - Driving from Phoenix

by jumpingnorman

Prescott already has a Costco, indicative of the amount of people who have decided to live in this cool town north of Phoenix. A lot of Phoenix residents decided to buy resthouses/vacation places here to escape the scorching sun during summer.

Aside from the fine arts festivals, antique shops at the Courthouse Plaza, the cowboy saloons with swinging doors and the Victorian houses on Mount Vernon Avenue, this town is also famous among rock climbers because of Granite Dells.

The best authentic Mexican food in the States!

by DarcyL about Restaurant Mexico

This little place has been around for a long time. The decor is simple and the waitresses are friendly. The food is not complicated or chic, it's just very delicious and very affordable. You must try the "Clare burro". It is whole beans, guacamole, fresh tomatillo salsa, and ranchero (crumbled white cheese). Healthy, tasty, wonderful.

Hot Dog/Sliders to Slick Down

by BruceDunning about Chicago Hamburger Company

The menu was good enough to have some of it all. The deluxe hot dogs are $4-5 range, and the sliders 92 cents, but the burgers of larger 1/3 to 2/3 sizes is $4-6.55 prices. Fries are $2-3 more, and then drinks are about $2. So, the eat price would average about $10 by the time you get satisfied. That then gets to be high end for a fast food type.
If you feel like competing with White Castle fame of throwing down a bunch of cheap onion tasting burgers about the size of a half dollar, try 10 sliders for $8.50 after 4PM each day I liked the 2/3 pound burger a lot; tasty, and the fires were good.

You must make the time to go to Sedona! Sedona is the most peaceful, relaxing, and soothing, yet stimulating places on earth! And they have the best jewelry. If you love silver, and you love beauty of the land... GO!
