one hour out of Phonenix--place to stay on way to GC

by galefamily

We are a family of five that want to stay one hour past Phoenix towards the GC in a place that is possibly not so cold and not sold out (hee hee hee)

Any ideas?

What about Cordes Lakes? Is this a possbility? Nice? Family oriented?

Thanks

RE: one hour out of Phonenix--place to stay on way to GC

There aren't any motels in Cordes Junction, just a couple of gas stations and a Mc Donald's. The closest string of motels to that is in Camp Verde, which is a few miles north. It's much lower in elevation (in a valley) and there are some cheap motels. I know that there's a Days Inn right on the freeway and the casino (Cliff Castle) has a nice hotel in it.
There are also some nicer places in Village of Oak Creek which is a few miles north of the I-17 Sedona exit (State Highway 179), but not quite to Sedona so it's a little cheaper. Also not very high in elevation.

Travel Tips for Phoenix

Christmas Holiday Lights in Arizona

by jumpingnorman

When in Arizona in December (and for the whole USA for that matter), enjoy places where "christmas ligthts" are the attraction --- very ingenious ways of setting up light effects and delivering a message.
The Community of Joy at 75th Ave and 101 Freeway offers a "drive-through" light extravaganza - and we went on that night when there was no entrance fee (cars usually charged about $10). You don't go out of your car --- just drive through the array of lights and the kids loved just admiring the dazzling sights of giant "jumping" bears, light tunnels, Santa, trains...you name something "christmassy", they have it...
Other places in Arizona that offer these light shows include the famous Phoenix Zoo lights, the Glendale Glitters, and the Botanical Garden Lights.
Google those places/events when in Arizona in December, and partake in these American traditions.

Taliesin West

by Sunshine64

Taliesin West is Frank Lloyd Wright's Desert Masterpiece. It was designed to be, and still is, a living working educational facility.

Various tours are available. I took the 90 minute "Insights" tour, that showed the living area, the auditorium, the meeting room, and more.

Highly recommended.

Rail is the New Transport Method

by BruceDunning

The first leg of rail line is in place since about 2008, and it covers around 20 miles form the airport. It goes out to Mesa and the last drop off is at Sycamore St in Mesa, which is on Main St, and just east of Dobson Rd.
A shuttle takes you to the rail line about 2 miles west of the airport. There are 28 stops and cost is $.75 one way, but you can get a day pass for $3.50

by JBER

Mill Avenue Ale House. The Ale House is located on Mill Avenue (shocker, I know) in Tempe, AZ just outside of the ASU campus. Great food and atmosphere mix to create the feel of a more eastern bar experience. In addition, the gentlemen who started this bar is from Buffalo, NY and has quite the Sunday Bills crowd.

Hiking Camelback Mountain

by katabatic97

Hiking can be a great way to get out of the city while staying in the city. Views from the mountain are spectacular, for more information on Camelback Mountain, visit this website provided by the City of Phoenix.
