Scottsdale

by suesmb

Will be travelling from the UK to Scottsdale in April with my Husband and 9 year old son. Does anyone have any particular tips on how to keep the son occupied during our stay.

Re: Scottsdale

As I experienced and have on my Scottsdale page, there is Macdonald's Ranch, www.macdonaldsranch.com, where you can go trail riding. There was a family getting saddled up just as we were dismounting. There are other places for riding too.
Have a great time.

If he likes art, there are plenty of art galleries in Scottsdale. If you have a car, you can also drive to the local mountains for a beautiful hike.

Have a good time.

If you have a car, it would be worthwhile an hour or 90 minute ride south to Tucson where there's a fantastic desert museum. I've taken all my grandchildren, and they loved it... animals, plants and a real look at what the desert is all about. There are also some interesting caves down that way and the children always love that experience.

Scottsdale is beautiful.. great shopping and good restaurants. You'll have a great trip!

Travel Tips for Scottsdale

Troon North Golf Club

by ATXtraveler

Well, let me first start by saying that on business, i was required to entertain clients by taking them to golf. Little did I realize that this was one of the best golf locations I have and probably ever will visit.

Troon North is really beyond belief, so I will leave it up to you to make your own judgement.

By the way, it is $240 a round. If you did not bring your clubs, worry not... they are available for rent.

Yummy Gelato Ice Cream; free wi-fi

by jumpingnorman about The Gelato Spot

So, we just finished watching the Tempe Lake fireworks and we were checked in at a resort in Scottsdale --- it was almost 11PM but we wanted some ice cream!

Thank God for The Gelato Spot along Scottsdale Road in Old Town which was still open! This place still had a lot of people and there was a small parking lot at the back which I think it shared with a nearby art gallery.

Service was friendly and the gelato was awesome! Gelato is ice cream with less fat and purer taste (only 2-8% fat whereas our American ice cream has 30%!). They are made daily and are fresh, garnished with fresh fruits, nuts, chocolate and Italian veggies.

In the mornings, this place also had breakfast through the Pascucci Coffee House (breakfast 0700-1030 AM).

This also has branches in Phoenix (40 St and Greenway beside Starbucks), Biltmore (Camelback and 32 St at Safeway), and North Scottsdale (Scottsdale Rd and Shea at Harkins).

They also have free Wi-Fi!

Old Time Authentic German Food

by BruceDunning about Black Forest Haus

It was fantastic and authentic German fare. The schnitzels range about $13-18, and other specialties are $12-20 price. I also got sausages next door as well as cheese and black bread for $4 a loaf for my daily lunches when hiking. They were all hand made and the bread was super The Bauren Schmaus was great, and plentiful for sure. The Germans do not get stingy on serving sizes. This was roast pork, smoked pork and beef roulade. Side dumplings and bread are for me. Price was $15

Mojave Desert - A 600 km drive.

by Jerelis

During our drive from Los Angeles to Phoenix we drove about 600 km through the Mojave Desert. Maybe it doesn't look like a long distance to you, but you must understand that the longest distance we're able to drive in The Netherlands is about 350 km! We passed the Joshua Tree National Monument, which is a very poor soil area with highly deformed trees. These trees can grow up till 15 meters.

We also drove through the windmill park of Palm Springs. There are about 2000 windmills located there. Palm Springs is an artificial oasis and the favorite golf destination for the rich and famous of Hollywood. We had lunch in Blythe, which is a dried out little town.

Hiking Around Scottsdale Perimeter!

by jumpingnorman

Well, Scottsdale is surrounded by the mountains of Phoenix which include the Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak (named after that first lady soldier killed during the USA invlovement with Iraq) and we are blessed with amazing hiking trails:

South Mountain Park
largest city park in the world which has spectacular views of Phoenix and also has miles of nature, biking and horseback trails

Camelback Mountain
This one is the most popular though; since it is the higest mountain with 1.2 mile trail that can be very steep at the summit --- best reserved for experienced hikers IMO.

Piestewa Peak (formerly known as Squaw Peak)
There was so much controversy when they changed this mountain's name - but now everybody agrees to it. It is a less strenuous hike but has still amazing views.

North Mountain Recreation Area
Located on either side of Seventh Street between Dunlap Ave and Thunderbird Road --- a flatter hiking trail

Cave Creek Recreation Area
This has hiking and biking trails
