MacDonald's Ranch

Trailriding...
It was my first time trailriding so I didn't really know what to expect. We were taken around the property seeing all sorts of different types of cacti. We saw a couple of birds, but no animals or reptiles. It was a slow, leisurely ride... no great gallops across the plains, no great cliffs to go down. They were quite good at judging the type of horse for the rider. If you do not bring your own helmet, they have them available. You will have to sign a detailed waiver of responsibility. Children MUST wear a riding helmet.
You're not encouraged to have cameras dangling around your neck, but if you can keep it still, no trouble bringing it along.
Cute Italian Restaurant
by newsphotogirl about The Cove Trattoria
What a great place. We didn't plan on coming here. First we tried Houstons but the wait was an hour and a half! So we tried Ruths Chris and the wait was even longer. As a last resort we tried Roy's but they were booked the entire evening. We walked by the Trattoria and said "Oh, let's just eat here." It's a small restaurant but it has a lot of charm. I felt like I could have been in any restaurant in Florence. The manager and the wait staff were great. Very attentive but not annoying. The food was delicious. My husband had the penne which was good. I had the lobster ravioli which was even better. I thought this place was a great find. Lobster Ravioli
wonderful fancy lunch in a casual atmosphere
by susiemargare about carefree station grill and bar, carefree, AZ
this was a very nice restaurant with a casual rather than formal atmosphere. the tables have heavy linen tablecloths, plus real silverware and cloth napkins -- a lovely environment. there is an extensive wine list. the service was friendly and fast. the only drawback to my visit was that the reception hostess was very snooty!
the restaurant is open on weekdays from 11 am to 9 pm, on saturdays and sundays from 11 am to 10 pm.
go north from scottsdale on scottsdale road; there will be desert on both sides of you. from darlington road (which is what scottsdale road turns into), turn right onto ho street. restaurant is on the left side of the "spanish village" shops, go in thru the sculpture garden, past the bodega bistro and tapas bar. i had the diablo burger, which was LARGE. it had a spicy/peppery taste with just a little char. it was terrific, well done but nicely juicy. it came with two side items. i chose greens and french fries. the greens had a peppery vinaigrette-type dressing; the fries were the skinny kind but were cooked to just the right degree of crispiness (not welded solid, like some places).
before the hamburger came, the server brought a fabulous dinner roll to the table. it was homemade, thick, and almost square. it was crisp but not brown. the butter had just the slightest tinge of spiciness.
with a soft drink, my meal was approximately $13.
Plan to go north on Scottsdale...

Plan to go north on Scottsdale Road all the way to Carefree. Find the 'Black Mountain Cafe' near the Spanish Village at the corner of Ho & Hum Streets. Try to eat breakfast there on their little patio. The food is very good and reasonably priced and you just might happen to sit near a movie celebrity! Afterwards visit the 'El Pedregal' where you can shop and eat.
To get to Carefree you'll be driving through some desert country, passing 'Rawhide' on the way. It's a nice drive, especially early in the morning on Sundays. From Scottsdale it is a 45 minute trip to Carefree. At the 'Black Mountain Cafe' you can sit inside but I suggest you try the patio with it's Spanish surroundings, then visit the Spanish Village across the street (take a picture of the entrance!) and later stop at the 'El Pedegral' where you can sit down, shop and have lunch. Many prominent persons live or have a home in Carefree and you just might come across someone who looks familiar. I talked to Chris Christofferson the other day while having breakfast at the 'Black Mountain Cafe' and he was very pleasant and friendly.
Frank Lloyd Wright Spire

This isn't really a place to see, but if you are in the area this work of art is beautiful especially at night when it is illuminated. You can pull into the mall to see it close up. It is 125 feet tall and constructed of steel. This design was taken from Frank Lloyd Wrights concept design of the Arizona State capitol building.
