holy cross

by sccreswell

Is the chapel of the holy cross actually used for anything? And who lives in the mansion right below it? It's beautiful as well!

Ron,

Thanks for the update on that house. My wife and I were in Sedona our one and only time back in 2004 while the house was being built and I've always wondered who was building that house, what they did, etc, etc.

Just curious, what denomination is the chapel?

Made me kind of wonder, because Catholic's don't have services, we have the Mass.

Travel Tips for Sedona

Stop at the Sedona Information Center first

by joiwatani

Before entering the town, make sure to stop at the Sedona Information Center first. Don't go to the town, right away. This is a place to go to the bathroom and to get great maps and information. Also, when you buy postcards and other gifts here, you are helping Sedona.

First, you can get a lot of information by stopping at the Information Center. When you only have one day travelling in Sedona, this is the most prudent way to do. You can ask some travel guides and maps at the center. Also, there are important do's and don'ts that they will let you know while travelling in Sedona.

Ask for the travel guide and map of the Sedona town. It is free. The information is very crucial with us because it guided us how to manage our time and not missing checking out the beautiful red rock country! I love that we went there with my sister who just came to the United States from Japan. She was as excited as we were going to Sedona.

A Little History for Sedona....

by deecat

The first settler in this area was J.J. Thompson who, under the 1862 Homestead Act, took "squatters" rights to land across from what today is the Indian Gardens store. He found the Indians's deserted gardens and a great natural spring so he built a cabin and called it Indian Gardens.

Others followed Thompson, building their own cabins and raising horses and cattle. One of these men was a farmer named Frank Pendley who is credited with engineering an innovative irrigation system, and it's still used at Slide Rock State Park (site of his early homestead!) Then, in about 1876, Beaver Head Stage Station was built 12 miles south of what we now know as Sedona. Once the stage station was established, the population of this area grew and grew.

Today, Sedona seems larger than it really is because of the vast numbers of tourist who visit each year. But, no matter how crowded it is, the natural beauty of Sedona and the surrounding area rises above all the commotion.

Well, there's plenty of stores in Sedona for shopping, many of them selling jewelry made by local American Indians. It is a small tourist town with many shops and restaurants, and some nice houses.

When visiting, if able, you should rent a bike and take it on some of the trails. The scenery is beautiful, and the trails range from easy to cheallenging...all worth the ride!

Drive up onto Airport Mesa and watch the sunset. Drive up Oak Creek Canyon and hike West Fork.
Spend time hiking and exploring Boynton Canyon.
Spend time on the Earth meditating-communing with Spirit.
Stop by the U.S. Forest Service office on Brewer Road and get hiking maps.
Definitely hike/see: Soldier's Pass Trail & Devils Kitchen, Seven Sacred Pools, Window of the World.
Climb to the saddle of Cathedral Rock. The awesome beauty of Sedona's red rocks, the play of light on the mountains on a 'puffy cloud' day, the unequaled sunsets and the spectacular view of the night sky.

Budweiser - King of all Beers?

by Jerelis

Let’s make no secret of it. We both like a nice cold glass of beer. Being abroad is always a challenge to find a beer we like, which reflects our taste of having a beer. In America it wasn’t really that hard to find the brand we liked, it was clearly Budweiser, popularly referred to as Bud.

Budweiser is a lager made with a proportion of rice as a substitute adjunct for barley malt. This immedaitely shows the problem for selling it in Europe as traditional brewers serve beer with only the four main ingredients (water, hops, wheat and barley). So Budweiser is not produced accoring to the German "Reinheitsgebot". But we found out that it didn’t taste distinctively different.

The Budweiser bottle is a rather familiar icon to most Americans. The bottle has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1876. We liked it, but the fraze “King of all Beers” is a bid of an overstatement!
