More about The Penrose Bed and Breakfast

Penrose is the best!

by TripAdvisor Member gdowen

We just returned from our WAY too short visit to the Penrose in Oak Creek Village, AZ.!

Beautiful building/home, atop a hill in a serene, quiet area (with only quail calls), is surrounded by several canyons and mesas. Owners Whitney and Christie Pope are top notch hosts. Why anyone would choose to stay in any other B&B in the Sedona area is beyond us.

The rooms [we stayed in the Mariposa] all have to die for views, most with a balcony, very comfortable beds, double head showers that are, well.....just a lot of fun (some rooms have a single shower with a Jacuzzi). The rooms are super for tall people (6'+), yes the shower heads are high, high ceilings, high pedestal sinks, higher commodes, just a side note for you tall folks...... For those of us who are vertically challenged (under 5'2"), it can be a bit difficult to adjust the shower heads or reach for that extra pillow in the closet.

We had breakfast on the deck, three mornings, every one was very well prepared and served by a super nice family who has worked for Whitney for some time, we were told, and it showed. Very friendly and courteous.

The Penrose provides bowl of fresh fruits and the fridge full of beverages to take at any time of the day. Coffee and tea can also be enjoyed at one's leisure. Another perk was was the yummy desserts provided at each evening at 8pm.

We enjoy hiking and Whitney has the inside on the best trails to visit. Lost Canyon is just super, kind of hate to say so as it is not visited by most tourists, so it is a bit private. But as more folks like us tell everyone that will change, but we hate to think hikers would not get to visit it. His directions were perfect and do not forget to ask him for info as he know his stuff. Don't miss Cathedral Rock and Devil's Bridge hikes either.

We ate three fabulous dinners, all suggested by Christie or Whitney, all three were fabulous.

First night, the Heartline Cafe. They served Continental flare, the waitress who waited on us is from Germany and her service and friendly nature made a very well prepared meal just that much better. If you are a wine drinker, the wine list is excellent. Very large portions not usually seen in a restaurant of this caliber.

Second night, the Cucina Rustica. An Italian/Mediterranean restaurant was romantic with great service. The house Chianti was a deal and suggested by Paul, a great waiter. The portions were very generous here also.

Third night, The Cowboy Club, but sit in the Silver Saddle Room. Beautiful leather booths with suede and tooled leather, top notch service by Melissa. Great but short wine list, but had my favorite Champaign, great steaks, huge portions. A lot of fun for sure, not to be missed when you visit.

In closing, Sedona/ Oak Çreek is a beautiful and romantic location that we cannot wait to return. The Penrose just makes the visit that much more memorable and one we will never forget.

As we sadly checked out, we were given complimentary T-shirts and a bag of the super delicous desert bars for our drive back to So. Cal.

Highly recommend, but check the mattress when you check in

We loved our experience at the Penrose. The owners and ambiance were very warm and inviting. The view is incredible and the rooms are decorated beautifully. The entire staff was gracious and everything was excellent. My only complaint was that the bed was very firm. I mentioned this when I was checking out and was told that they had pillow tops for them. Perhaps they just forgot to put one on our bed during our stay -- I regret not mentioning it sooner and I would suggest that if you stay here, when you first check in, hop on the bed and make sure it has a pillow top (unless you like a very firm mattress). They are extremely gracious and I'm sure would have accomodated our request for one had we thought to bring it up sooner.

Lovely Experience

Our room had a beautiful view of the red rocks. The breakfasts were excellent and our hosts were friendly without being over bearing. We were given a list of restaurants, sights, places of interest along with reviews written by former guests. This was extremely helpful.
We highly recommend this establishment.

Our best experience !!

My wife and I spent three wonderfull days at the Penrose B&B and didn't want to leave. Had we known how beautiful it was, we would have spent the entire week there. Everything was perfect-rooms were spotless, adorned with crisp white linens and towels, and native artistic motif.

In the morning we were served the best fruit crepes one can imagine, overlooking the spectacular views of Quail creek valley amongst the redrock hills. Before leaving for the day, we had access to a variety of fruits, snacks and drinks. At bedtime a luscious snack (more like a desert) is served. Upon check-out the owners will have a surprise waiting for you to take home.

We have stayed at many bed and breakfasts and this is by far the best --- can't wait to go back.

We loved The Penrose!

Perfect is the only way to describe our stay at the Penrose B&B. Our room, the Kokopelli, was gorgeous. The views were incredible and the service was faultless.

The only problem we had was that I ended up getting sick, right before our stay. Nonetheless, this is the relaxing environment you need to be in, to get better...FAST!!!! The breakfasts were delicious....I looked forward to waking up early in the morning to watch the sunrise from our Jacuzzi tub and run down for breakfast on the deck. Nightly, they put out delectable snacks and the refrigerator was always stocked with cold water, juices, etc. They even did our laundry!

The Penrose is a class act and why anyone would stay anywhere else is beyond me! See for yourself!

Clean, welcoming B&B--would recommend

by TripAdvisor Member gershurd

My husband and I stayed at the Penrose for two nights (9/2006). Out room was clean, cozy and welcoming with unbelievable views. We arrived and were greeted by Christie, who gave us a tour of the house and all its amenities (books, CD’s, movies, not to mention the complimentary soda, juice, coffee, and bottled water, fruit, homemade sweets, and more). We also had water and chocolates waiting for us in our room—a pleasant surprise after a long drive. Breakfasts were delicious and again, the service was great. Whitney made it a point to introduce himself to us (and the other guests) and was full of interesting and helpful information about the area. He took our picture during breakfast and upon checkout, he had printed it out as a keepsake—another wonderful surprise. I would definitely recommend The Penrose if you appreciate personal touches and hospitality. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Things to know: The Penrose is a 10-15 minute drive from downtown Sedona. There is no pool at the B&B, though I hear it’s in the works.

Absolutely Breathtaking!!

One of the things that we must state is that the Penrose Bed and Breakfast website does not do the property and the incredible views justice!!!

As first-time visitors to Sedona, we could not have chosen a more perfect place for our 2-night stay. My husband and I chose the "Romantic" Package which included a lovely dinner and opted for the Wildlife "Out of Africa Safari Park" which we highly recommend.

The hosts of the Penrose were delightful and the cleanliness of the property was above and beyond expectations.

If in the future we do return to Sedona, without hesitation or reservation, we would chose the Penrose Bed and a heartbeat!

One of our best vacations

by TripAdvisor Member Golf_&_Travel_Lovers

We spent 7 nights at the Penrose from Oct 28 - Nov 4, 2006. The property is beautiful, immaculate inside and out, in a quiet residential area, nestled against red rock formations. Our room, the Javelina was very nice, private and clean. The Queen size bed was very comfortable.

The owners are gracious, always available to answer questions, they make you feel at home. Breakfasts are wonderful, and the views on the deck where breakfast is served are breathtaking.

I agree with the previous poster. This was our first trip to Sedona, and unless you've seen that part of the country before, or similar areas in Utah or Wyoming, nothing can prepare you for the views. The images on the inn's website - as beautiful as they are - pale in comparison to the real thing.

We chose 3 packages: 2 golf packages & the Grand Canyon Sunset tour. We enjoyed playing the Oakcreek Country Club especially, and the Sedona Golf Resort. The tour to the Grand Canyon was well worth it!

As far as things to do, I would not miss lunch at the Enchantment resort. We went on several hikes which we absolutely loved (Devil's Bridge, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock/Courthouse loop). What a beautiful area, and the Penrose is the perfect place to stay at in order to explore it.

The Perfect Penrose!

My husband and I just returned from a week-long stay at The Penrose Bed and Breakfast in Sedona, AZ. Everything....every detail was wonderful. We felt "at home" from the moment we walked in the door and were led to our room. The bed was very comfortable and we had a spacious bathroom. Gourmet breakfasts served each morning were delicious and the service was wonderful. I was thrilled that it was a short distance from "uptown" Sedona (nestled in a valley), close enough to get to town in a few minutes but not stuck in the middle of commercialism. The owners, the staff, the accomodations, the bed, the food....everything was wonderful and we were sad that our vacation was over and we had to leave.
