Travel Tips for Sierra Vista

Chiricahua National Monument

by TinKan

Located about 50 miles away is Chiricahua National Monument which is a place of wonder and beauty.

The park is known as having some of the best marked trails in the United States and there is a trail for all young and old. At the peak in one area you will even find a nice ¼ mile trail that is paved and is wheelchair accessible which is nice.

Murray Springs: Reading the Story

by Basaic

The earth has recorded its own history like pages in a book. This history is recorded in the sand, clay, dirt, limestone, decayed plants and animals, and artifacts left behind. It forms a story for those who can read it. The story tells of changing climates and wondrous animals that became extinct years ago. Changing conditions like climate cause the formation of different layers. These layers are frequently named for people or locations in the area. If you look closely at the layers in the photo, you can pick out a dark grayish layer called the Clanton Clay Black Mat. The evidence of Clovis Man's existence was found below this layer. The Clanton Clay Black Mat layer was formed about 11,000 years ago. It was named after the infamous Clanton Family from Tombstone, and was probably caused by a sudden rise in the water level in the San Pedro Valley. Did some massive flooding 11,000 years ago drive the Clovis People from their homes here?

Ramsey Canyon: Stop 2 Natural Dam

by Basaic

This granite outcropping is an igneous rock formation that forms a natural dam. This causes the land above the dam to form into a lush wetland supporting the types of life you see along the trail. This formation formed about 1.4 billion years ago when molten materail deep inside the earth slowly cooled.

Oktoberfest

by Basaic

Since Sierra Vista is outside a US Army base it has a wider variety if cultures than many small towns. The German Culture is well represented in town. Every year Sierra Vista celebrates Oktoberfest with typical German food and snacks, Jagermeister, and lots of German Beer. We also have German bands and lots of booths selling crafts and since this was an election yaer, politics. The festival is held in Veterans' Memorial Park.

Sierra Vista - AZ

by TinKan

I had a small business trip to one of our facilities here in Sierra Vista for two days, so I thought I would put a few things down as I will be visiting here more often in the future and I can add more as I discover it.

Sierra Vista is a lovely area that is about 70 miles south east of Tucson near the Mexico border. The area is in the high desert so the temperatures are about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in Tucson which makes it a nice area to be in during the summer months.

I will add pictures and more info over the next few days.

"Just a short visit?"

I came here for a 28 day test and still find myself here after 3 months.... I wonder how much longer I will be here for????
