Howdy!
I'm heading down to Tucson in October and just want to tool around the desert and check out the area. Can anyone recommend a cool, out-of-the-way place to stay? I'm not looking at going super-cheap, but not looking for a resort spa, either. Just somewhere that I'd love to tell my friends back home about - in a good way!
Thanks!
At that time of year there are probably lots of condos for rent on a weekly basis - quite a few places in the NW part of the city.. often near golf courses. Any of the real estate agents would know. Tucson is pretty easy to get around by car and there are some nice state parks on all sides of the city. There are probably also places to stay up on Mount Lemmon which is more woodsy than desert but not a long drive back.
The Hotel Congress is not out-of-the-way, but is a cool, lively place to stay. If you want way out of the way, it is nice to stay down in Bisbee at one of the many B's.
One of the best places we found on the outskirts of Tuscon were the rooms at Biosphere2. Totally amazing to be out in the hills late at night watching the wildlife.
The last time we tried to stay though, they said they were closed - not sure if they've re-opened.

Thanks, everyone! I'll be sure to check out all your recommendations. I can't wait to get to the desert!

I don't know if it is too late to make your plans, but I would recommend Hacienda Del Sol. It is located in a BEAUTIFUL area of town on the east side near the mtns and the place seems really intimate and charming. Here is the link:

Enjoy Tucson. I love it!
Well, I'm not sure how out of the way you are looking for. In Tucson proper I like Lodge on the Desert (www.lodgeonthedesert.com). When we stayed there, I was looking for something actually in Tucson with beautiful grounds (citrus trees, etc.) but not so expensive as the Arizona Inn. We liked this place very much and loved Tucson. Hope you have a great time.
Happy travels!
