Tucson in May / Omni Resort / Priceline Packages
by sea_urchin24
Hi,
I'm new to this board, and am hopeful of finding some advice!
My husband recently announced that he wanted to spenda week in Tucson for vacation.
Being the frugal type, I was checking out Priceline.com, and found a package (air/hotel/rental car) for about $560.00 per person for the first week in May 2005 at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort and Spa. Neither of us are golfers, but the write up looked pretty good (and if I can find a deal at a nice place all the better).
The flight times aren't listed, so I know I'd be running a risk on getting ideal departure/arrival times, but was wondering if anyone might be able to give me any constructive feedback on the following:
-Omni Resort in Tucson
-Priceline; ever used it for these types of packages?..and your experience?
-Early May in Tucson...typical weather?
Many thanks!

I live in Scottsdale and I recommend you come here rather than Tucson but if you must...
I've stayed at Omni's before. Thay are all really nice hotels. In Tucson, I would research more spa places. They are famous for those and if you don't golf, you're wasting money staying at a golf resort, gaurenteed.
I've used Priceline before. They are pretty good.
Weather in May: HOT HOT HOT> Bring tank tops, shorts, sunscreen, and swimsuit. Will be in the 90's easily!

Hi Sea Urchin,
Weather in Tucson in early May is HOT. I lived in Tucson for 4 years while attending the UofA there, and it's hot and dry. Definitely bring sunscreens and light colored summer clothes. It can exceed 100F.
Good luck.

We enjoyed Tucson. Sorta depends on what you like doing. Are you planning on sunning by the pool or exploring the neighbourhood?
We spent 4 days there in March. The weather was warm, but still liveable. I'm not sure what we would do in the heat of May if it is as hot as people say it is. We visited the local desert parks, went to the Sonaran desert museum, drove out to the White Dove mission, etc.
You should check out prices of just flying there yourself, renting a car for a week and staying in a local hotel. I don't think a week car rental was much more than $200 and in early 2004, hotel rooms at the Best Western that we stayed at were between $60 and $70 per night, so it may be cheaper just to book things yourself.
Good luck with your plans.

I don't know about the Omni Resort in Tucson but I do know about the weather. If you aren't golfers why stay at a golf resort - you'll certainly be paying extra for it.
Typical early May weather is sunny and dry with afternoon high temperatures in the high 80's and low 90's.
Hot is relative and that's not hot to me but I live in Phoenix.

Travel Tips for Tucson
Degrazia Gallery In The Sun
by bottleofdoom
Degrazia Gallery In The Sun is located 6300 N. Swan Rd.
Phone# 520-299-9192 The Degrazia Gallery is a very quaint adobe art gallery in the foothills of Tucson. It's very easy to get to. I'm not a big fan of Degrazia's artwork, but the adobe stuctures he built and lived in are typical southwestern design with whimsical touches such as his handprints in the walls of one of the rooms. There's 2 buildings and a small chapel all built by himself.
Bees Attack at Tucson Electric Park

Spring Training!
This is a great place to see a baseball game!
I just happened to be lucky enough to attend the March 24, 2005 game in Tucson between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies, (which was cancelled the middle of fifth inning due to an attack of swarming bees.)
It was a beautiful day for a game. The sun was full in the clear blue sky, but not too intense. I was sitting about 30 rows in when all of a sudden the game came to a pause. I couldn't really tell why, but saw the players on the field running in different directions ducking and diving.
After seeing the players swat in the air I said to my friends I think there's bees on the field. They all thought I was crazy, and there was no announcement to explain what was happening. A minute later thousands of bees raced upward (at a minimum a foot) above our heads and they no longer were laughing.
We watched the players go to the dugouts in hiding then, try to return to the field to continue play a couple of times to no avail, each time they continued to be attacked. Finally the game was called and security personell flooded the field. I guess they were afraid the fans would be mad and would run to the field, but most understood and exited orderly. We sat in box seats which were great; however, we would get tickets for the outfield berm nextime. you can lay out a blanket on the lawn and get a suntan whil watching the game.
Tickets range from $4 in the outfield berm to $15 for a shaded club seat.
cold nose...
by mht_in_la
Inside Kitt Peak's visitor center there are many interesting exhibits and a theater. The photo shows an infrared image of me. The higher the temperature the brighter the image. Just coming from the outside, I seemed to have a cold nose (the dark spot on my face). Kitt Peak is about 5,000 feet higher than Tucson so it's usually much cooler. Bring a jacket.
Remember Your Grannies Biscuts???

Not a tourist destination by any means. This place is a small local diner. Some of the patrons even have reserved parking spaces. Food is great, portions are not stingy at all. Bring your appetite, and your sense of humor. Also, don't expect matching cups... Molly's friends always bring her coffee mugs and she uses em at the restaurant........ The house special omlet.
Gourmet Pizza at Gatsby
by lamentforicarus about Time Market
Time market sells a wide variety of imported goods, including chocolate, wine, cheese, and olives among others, and features a small deli and a pizza place called Gatsby Pizza. Gatsby offers delightful stone-fired gourmet pizzas and delicious toppings on a pesto or marinara base. Try a Mediterranean pizza, topped with shrimp, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, feta cheese and olives over a savory pesto sauce. Should you be in the mood for a more southwestern selection, experiment with toppings like blackbeans, chilis, or salsa. Time market offers a covered outside patio in addition to several inside tables.
