Travel Tips for Tucson

Tucson’s Cultural Influences

by KimberlyAnn

Tucson’s Mexican and American Indian roots are ever present in Tucson. You will find that the Spanish language is widely spoken by its Mexican residents. Mexican restaurants, with its spicy food, may be found in large numbers throughout the city and the Tucson area. You may find Indian Fry Bread being cooked up outside of tourist attractions. You will also see many signs of the American Indian and Mexican influences on the city’s architecture. The buildings with their adobe like walls and flat roofs, which are often two stories and may have ladders resting against them are influenced by the early Indians that once lived in the area. The buildings with their adobe like walls, tiled roofs, and sometimes with lovely gardens enclosed in courtyards are representative of the Mexican influence. As you shop you will also find many items that represent these two cultures such as Navajo rugs, Pueblo Pottery, baskets, kachina dolls, moccasins, and gold and silver jewelry.

Desert driving

by kala6487

When I vacation, I like to drive around and get away from the cities or towns and see the local scenery. As you leave Tucson, you are not disappointed - there is nothing but miles of nothing, which is a novelty for people like me.
I drove through part of the Sonoran desert on some dirt roads. It was great even though I didn't see any wildlife. I drove on Golden Gate Rd until I got to Picture Rocks Rd. There are other similar roads in the area to explore and it might be advisable to have a rugged vehicle (I did not).

Pottery

by matcrazy1 about Gift shop

There are various gifts sold in a gift shop of Arizona-Sonora Desert museum. Rather tourist stuff than real art, I suppose. You can see pottery, probably of native Americans (Indians) there. Look at my picture, please. I'd choose some books on Sonora Desert. $5 to $40 for a book as I remember well.

Awesome Malay!

by blueskyjohn about Neo of Melaka

The ambience is great. But nothing compares to the food. The service is very good. Staff very helpful with suggestions from the menu.

The menu has great options and the food is authentic Malaysian. I haven't had Malaysian food this good since I was in Malaysia three years ago.

I have eaten here quite a few times and it was excellent each time. For an appetizer the veg. spring rolls were great. My favorite dish was the Beef Rendong.

Bohemian Late Night

by bottleofdoom about The Grill

The Grill has the atmosphere of a 1940's diner, but the menu is rather modern ecclectic. Since it's downtown, the clientele tend to be of the hip kind. It is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. They like to advertise coffee, meat & sugar, but they also have a bar & some healthy, vegan selections. Also, have fun stuff like bowls of Cap N' Crunch. Enjoy live music in The Red Room. Fried ravioli! - Tater tots - The sandwiches- The pasta dishes
