Residence Inn Tucson on East Speedway Blvd--has anyone stayed there?
by galefamily
Hi
The place sounds nice and looks nice but what is the neighborhood like? I will be there with my son alone and don't want to feel uncomfortable coming home if it's dark alone.
Also the only review I saw was someone with a beer can in his hand saying how the place was good b/c it was close to Hooters. Is this a party kind of place as opposed to a family place?
Also what other places can we stay at in Tuscan that have kitchen facilities? Not just a microwave and fridge.
Thanks in advance,
Atarah

Neighborhood is the edge of a large retail area and just before a golf course with townhomes across the street. A couple of other hotels are nearby. It's definitely not bad though and I would personally feel comfortable walking around. You're also a couple of blocks from the Pantano Wash, which is good for walking. I've never seen a Residence Inn that was a good party place. They're too expensive for that.
Per kitchens, there's also the Extended Stay America on Grant near Swan. It's cheaper, fairly good quality and has a full kitchen in all of the rooms. The area is also good with a large shopping center (with an enormous, 24-hour Fry's supermarket, a few restaurants and second-run movie theater) just across the street, plus a Trader Joe's next door.

Travel Tips for Tucson
Dress casual
by bottleofdoom
One of the first things I noticed when I moved here from a big city is that Tucson is very laid back. I was working as a wedding photographer when I first moved here, and I was amazed by how many people wore jeans to a wedding! That would never happen in Philly. Even shorts are acceptable at these formal affairs.
Walk downtown and out of the touristy limelight
by celicababee
I took the liberty of walking on Stone Ave and just walking through alley ways and through housing districts to get a sense of the "Real Tucson." In Tucson there is a sense of economic depression or maybe because it is a border town. There is absolutely no grass, and the compensation for yard work is sand and rocks. The only grass to be seen for miles will be at your ritzy locales' and often times at housing/apartment complexes. Most of the housing looks dilapidated and there is a sense of the whole town just sighing under the weight of the years.
But as you walk around you will notice tons of other travlers hoofing it right along with you...they all seem to congregate downtown in one particular spot. But keep walking...again you're goal is to find the REAL TUCSON.
4th North Avenue
by matcrazy1 about Various
There are at least a few pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs located on both sides of 4th North Avenue just north of a downtown. This is area more for locals than tourists, I suppose. But looked safe and quite nice. And there were quite many locals there in the evening - mainly young people.
Casual dress = T-shirt + jeans or shorts + trainers for example. No nudity accepted :-). Strange clothes accepted!
A real Tucson cultural experience
by bocmaxima about El Guero Canelo
El Guero Canelo is regarded by most every local as the best Mexican place in town. It's not just the great food that is offered here, but it's also the ambiance.
Tucked away in an obscure portion of southern Tucson (12th Avenue at Utah Street, between Irvington and Drexel), coming here, especially on a weekend night, provides a real close-up view at Tucson's, and the Southwest's Hispanic culture.
There is another, smaller Guero Canelo on the north side (Oracle 1/2 block north of Grant, directly across from the No-Tel Motel), and although the food is as good, it doesn't offer this same cultural insight. Great burritos
and they even let DOGS in??
by lucythedog
Are ya kiddin me? Dogs are welcome...they dont want ya killin your dogs in your vehicle when it gets soooooooooo hot...so bring em in!! It is a great place for humans too...great vintage aircraft...great tours...knowledgable docents....most are ex-air force and have great stories. I actually got to go in Pres Kennedy's Air Force One!! I rule!
