Red Garter Bed & Bakery

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on June 19, 2006

This old brothel (which is supposedly haunted) is a wonderful place to stay. The best thing abotu this place is the kind and hospitable innkeeper. John Holst is very thoughtful and goes out of his way to learn about each guest. He gave us the inside tip on where to go, a tour of his place, and he even gave us some free food when my wife was sick. You get a free breakfast in the morning of fresh fruit and wonderful pastries. If you don't want ot pay big bucks to stay at the Grand Canyon this is the place to be.

There are plenty of places to eat supper nearby and lots of quaint little shops in this Route 66 town.

Unique Quality: Watch for ghosts :-) We didn't see any. Oh yeah, the innkeeper takes every guests picture with the men wearing ten gallon hats and the ladies with a red feather boa.

Yummy breakfasts

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 13, 2003

I just thought I'd include this picture of the Red Garter's dining area. It has been lovingly restored and there is quite a lot of memorabilia. We could have spent lots more time filling up on local lore. There is even a house ghost!

Directions: From Phoenix take I-17 north to Flagstaff and west on I-40.

At Williams, leave Interstate 40 on Exit 163, turn south and go 5 blocks to the Historic District.

The Red Garter is a two-story yellow brick building facing you on west-bound Railroad Ave.

Restored Wild West bordello

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 13, 2003

The Red Garter Bed and Bakery looked great: unusual, lots of history, and good food. This building is a restored bordello from the 1800s Wild West! Make sure Innkeeper and Owner John Holtz shows you his picture album and shares his stories at breakfast! They are fascinating!

Unique Quality: All the guest rooms were actual rooms that the working girls used. In the Madam's Room, grafitti on the wall was uncovered during restoration that indicated real customer satisfaction: "One you did not get, you sure missed something good." If only walls could talk!
