Rolling into town
My favorite thing about Yuma was how I arrived and how I left.
The name had always intrigued me so I made it a point to go. Rolled into down on the old Southern Pacific line aboard the Sunset Limited.

We are headed south for the first time in early January and are looking for advice on the best route to take from Alberta to Yuma. We are hoping to avoid bad weather/roads and big climbs as we will be pulling a Fifth wheel. All suggestions appreciated.
I would suggest taking Interstate 15 south all the way to Las Vegas and then taking US Highway 95 from just south of Las Vegas directly to Yuma. The interstate is usually kept clear of snow better than the lesser roads. I have not driven the entire route; but interstates usually are not as steep as the backroads either. Crossing the Rockies will be the hard part. Drive safe, my friend.
That's my (our - MrL's the driver) advice too.
That is the best route, but you will still have to keep an eye on the weather around Idaho Falls. If it's going to storm anywhere along the way, that's where it will happen. So if the weather is questionable when you get there, I'd recommend stopping for the night. Once you get past Idaho Falls it should pretty much be clear sailing all the way.
I agree with the above advise. The further south, the better the conditions. Good luck,

There are a lot of commercials "in sky" = on tall poles in the USA and surely in Yuma as well - just to be well seen from far distance while driving. Look at Yuma Inn Motel commercial in my picture.
The same in most European countries, btw does this idea derive from the USA? I think so.
I discovered that Yuma gets cold just like everywhere else in winter, I had expected warmer weather, & hadn't factored the low humidity into it, so if it's winter when you visit, bring the woollies! bucket loads of moisturiser!!!! Serious!
The people who dug the mines would come to work in regular clothes and change into digging clothes in a room like this one. The digging clothes were never washed and were just worn until they almost fell apart.
The little main street of Yuma is nicer than I expected. Part of it is blocked off so cars can not pass. Pedestrians can stroll and enjoy the street easier in the area near this fountain. Another smart thing that they have done in Yuma is to build awnings of metal screen over the parking areas to provide shade for cars.
