Travel Tips for Yuma
Anza and Palma
by mht_in_la
Yuma's history is all about crossing the Colorado River. The first recorded river crossing by the Westerners took place in 1775, when Spanish colonizing expedition lead by Juan Bautista de Anza successfully crossed the Colorado River with the help from Chief Olleyquotequiebe, or "Palma" as called by Anza, of the local Quechan tribe who controlled the crossing. After the crossing Anza pressed on to San Francisco and San Jose and established Spain's "new world empire". The route he used is now called the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. Since then, this area changed hands many times from Spain to Mexico and finally the United States.
The photo attached was re-produced from an outdoor exhibit in Yuma Crossing state park illustrating the 1775 crossing.
Who were prisoners?
by matcrazy1
Their crimes ranged from murder to polygamy, with grand larceny being the most common. A majority served only portions of their sentences due to the ease with which paroles and pardons were obtained.
Prison
by PeterVancouver
On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial Prison at Yuma, and were locked into the new cells they had built themselves.
A total of 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within these walls during the prison's thirty-three years of operation. Their crimes ranged from murder to polygamy, with grand larceny being the most common
By 1907, the prison was severely overcrowded, and there was no room on Prison Hill for expansion. The convicts constructed a new facility in Florence, Arizona. The last prisoner left Yuma on September 15, 1909.
Bars at Castle Dome
by Basaic
Castle Dome had 5 bars and cantinas inside a mile. Miners would often come here after work to unwind and relax. The bars were also frequented by cowboys who drove cattle to Castle Dome to feed the miners and other townspeople. The town got rather wild when the miners and cowboys hit the bars at the same time.
Yuma MCAS
by bilgeez
Not open to the public except for special occasions, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, is the hub of the area. Most of the local economy is dependent on this base, although less so as the population has grown and other business has expanded the economy, such as the Dole processing plant for fresh vegtables which is a whiff away from the base!
If you can tour the base when it is open to the public or have a friend or relative stationed there, it is a very interesting place to visit.
