Travel Tips for Yuma

Oil lamps?

by matcrazy1

I noticed oil lamps in cells of the prison. Hmm... wasn't it dangerous?
One of the early electrical generating plants in the West was utilized here to furnish power for lights and run a ventilation system in the cell blocks. So, did prisoners really use oil lamps there?

What did they use a bell for?

by matcrazy1

This bell displayed in Yuma Territorial prison, as on my picture, was used for... I don't know.
Probably it was a church bell used to announce a sunday mass as the prisoners were allowed to join the mass in a prison. Is my theory wrong?

Ocean to Ocean Bridge

by Erika74

Gateway Park is one of the newest park in town. It is located right under the Ocean to Ocean Bridge. This bridge reopened within the past decade. Currently it is a one lane bridge that connects Old Town Yuma and the Quechan hill. Just norhtwest on that road you end up at the Paradise Casino. CHA CHING!!!!!
The Bridge lights up at Night and you can read it from afar "Ocean to Ocean Bridge".

The park was the recent venue for my husbands Surprise Party. The Colorado River flows through here- it provides a beach area.
The park actually forms part of the Heritage Area for Yuma, Arizona. It is considered to be part of the West Wetlands; an equistrian trail goes through here as well.

Historical walkway

by matcrazy1

There is the walkway in Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park with written chronologically historical facts referred to the prison. Hmm... some facts are really interested. Add cool pictures/drawings.

Guard Tower at YTP State Park

by Basaic

One of the first thimgs you will notice as you approach the Yuma Territorial Prison Historic State Park is the guardtower. The guardtower was built on top of the water storage tank on a platform placed there to reduce evaporation. After the prison was closed the guardtower served several other purposes including a civil defense lookout tower during World War 2, until the state park was established.
