Travel Tips for Eureka Springs

When the Elderly Give Way

by mrclay2000

Many historic districts in America are clinging to their very lives. Unless private residents have moved in or modern merchants keep a place alive, too many historic buildings and places of interest suffer a swfit demolition. Across the street from the county courthouse is a building marked "Eagle's Nest," which going by the placard is marked on the National Register of Historic Places. The present list knows no such member, and the present construction teams gutting its interior recognize none of its history.

Golden Missouri

by BruceDunning

This is by far one of the best side trips we have taken. It is in the middle of a small town of 200 people. The owner of a tire company BAll & Prier started a collection of a lot of items 50 years ago. Now he has a museum for the public that is one of the best on display in the Midwest. It has Indian artifacts of all kinds, hundreds of glass settings and plate collections form mostly early 1900's, old bottles, weapons and swords, a great gem and rocks collection; then--upstairs lunch boxes, more glass, and so much it is mind boggling. I highly commend this family for what they have presented and it is all free.
Open 10:30-4:30 April-Oct on Tues-SAt and only weekends off season.

Basin Park or Springs

by mrclay2000

Basin Springs seems about the only place in town not crowded with souvenir shops and tourist attractions. This is a quiet place to relax from the hubbub up the street and moreover stands over the very founding spot of Eureka Springs. Waters still gurgle up from underground streams, while the forested hillside provides abundant shade.

Thorncrown Chapel

by BruceDunning

This temple was opened in 1980 and over 5 million have come to visit and/or seek peace. It is not denominational, but is religious based in spirit. There are 425 windows and 6,000 square feet of glass. All the timber frames are cross supported against each other so stronger methods were not needed. Jim Reed and his wife made this happen all on their own in order to give peace to others. There is also a worship center on the grounds, just about as impressive, hanging off the cliff. E. Fay Jones designed this and he also did a similar one at Garvin Gardens in Hot Springs. Services are 9 and 11 on Sundays, and the chapel holds around 300. Tours are open 9-5 daily and donations should be standard to help in the support.

"Eureka!" Springs

by shdw100

Eureka Springs is one of those little places nestled in the Ozark Mountains of Northern Arkansas. I first visited here when I was 4, and from what I remember it was great! Well, it has not lost much of it's charm since my return, although it has become a little more touristy from what I remember. We came here specifically to see the wonderful fall colors, but also to take in some of the sites as well. I was quite impressed with what I saw as the place has grown a bit!
