residence inn DOWNTOWN, little rock, AR: very nice pet-friendly hotel with terrific staff

this is for the residence inn downtown, NOT the one on shackleford road.

this is a very nice hotel in the river market district, which is along the arkansas river close to downtown. it is well appointed; my room had an extremely comfortable king bed, a large bathroom (!) with spacious shower (!), a desk with connections for a computer, and an L-shaped sofa, which opens out into a double bed if needed. there is also a large flat-screen TV. the small kitchen has a two-burner stovetop (i can't remember if it had an oven), a fairly large refrigerator, a microwave, and a dishwasher. it also has silverware, dishes, glasses, pots and pans, and cooking utensils. the phone has two lines and a voice-mail system for messages.

they have a breakfast buffet of some kind, but i was never up in time to check it out. they also have free wi-fi in the rooms AND a room off the lobby with two computers and internet access (in case you're like me -- the last person in the world who doesn't have a laptop). there is outside parking for $8/day, with access to the lot from both the street and inside the hotel.

they do not have a restaurant (or room service), but there are lots of restaurants nearby. there are also many take-out and delivery places nearby.

there is a flat fee of $100 if you bring a dog (per visit, NOT per night). i was happy to pay it; not many of the nicer hotels allow dogs. if you have a dog with you, ask for a room away from the elevators.

i paid $115/night (plus parking). i reserved through their website.

things i wish they would change --

-- local phone calls are 75ยข, which seems ridiculous to me when even the cheapest of motels gives you free local calls.

-- not only that, long-distance calls are $2.75 plus the long-distance rate, which seems even more ridiculous to me. not everyone has a cell phone -- hard to believe, i know, but still. the long-distance rate i'm fine with, but the $2.75 was really egregious, in my opinion.

-- there are no bellpersons to help with luggage, although they do have those carts on wheels for guest use.

the people who work at this hotel are absolutely terrific. every time i asked for anything, they went above and beyond the call of duty. no matter who was at the front desk, they were unfailingly courteous, friendly, and very kind to me and my dog. they even called a taxi for me.

for another example, i am hard of hearing and could not understand the voice-mail instructions (which are recorded on the phone). when i called down to the desk, the woman on duty told me that she could not leave the desk, but then she sent up a manager FROM ANOTHER MARRIOTT NEARBY to guide me through the phone system. it's hard to beat that kind of service!

and for yet ANOTHER example, for some reason, i could not get the hot water to stay on; it came out hot but then turned cold. i called down to the front desk, and they immediately sent up an engineer of some type; naturally, it worked for him (i was very addled already from a difficult trip in icy weather)! however, did he act like i was the stupidest person he had ever met? no, he did not; he was extremely gracious and polite about the whole thing.

BEST OF ALL FROM MY POINT OF VIEW, THIS HOTEL IS DOG-FRIENDLY! if you have a dog with you, it would probably be easier to ask for a room away from the elevators to reduce the problem of noise from people walking by.

The Peabody Hotel is the...

The Peabody Hotel is the premiere Hotel in Little Rock and all of Arkansas.
I think that you can still stay there for $75-$100 per night especially on week ends. Of course there are more expensive rooms.

Famous for the Marhing Ducks.
